Carbon Insetting: Capturing and Storing GHG Emissions to Mitigate Climate Change

A new report by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) emphasized the need for the world to reduce 45% of emissions within the next eight years in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030. Transformational change across industries, governments, and society as a whole is key to making this a reality.

Nestlé PH supports Plastic 3R Hacks PH in search for innovations to tackle plastic pollution

Industry experts from the private, public and NGO organizations came together as the judges to review the proposals during the final round of the Plastics Hackathon - Team STP , upper left, was declared the winning team

Nowadays, the younger generation is actively doing its part to save the planet by championing advocacies to combat climate change and plastic waste, supporting sustainable brands and their causes, and promoting the importance of a more environmentally conscious lifestyle. With the help of technology, they are developing practical and effective solutions that haven’t been tried before to address pressing environmental problems.

Recently, young minds harnessed fresh and unique ideas to solve plastic pollution through a nationwide virtual hackathon called Plastic 3R Hacks PH, organized by Redwizard Events Technology in collaboration with the Healthy Oceans and Clean Cities Initiative.

More than 150 participants representing cities and universities across the country registered for the competition and underwent a series of virtual activities to develop their projects. After preliminary judging, ten teams were selected, advancing to the final stage in which they pitched their projects to a board of judges composed of industry experts and representatives from UN-Habitat Philippines and the Government of Japan.

In the end, Team STP from Manila was declared the winner for its project that combined urban farming, data science, and IoT to decrease household generated waste and increase the recovery rate of plastic waste. The team received a cash prize of Php 50,000, which will help it to further develop its project.

The winning team STP Manila with Misha Rabat, Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs and Sustainability of Nestlé Philippines

With the vision that none of its packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfills and the environment, Nestlé Philippines fully supports initiatives like the Plastic 3R Hacks PH that drive awareness and discourse on the plastic waste crisis. During the program, Misha Rabat, Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs and Sustainability of Nestlé Philippines, shared the company’s initiatives to achieve its ambition of making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 while reducing virgin plastic consumption by 1/3.

“At our research centers in Switzerland and around Asia, we are looking at alternatives to plastics. In the Philippines, one of our recent milestones is the shift from plastic to paper straws for our ready-to-drink products We’re also reducing plastics in our operations and testing refilling stations to distribute our products.”

“One of the things we are doing to avoid our waste ending up in nature is sustaining plastic neutrality. This means we are recovering the equivalent amount of plastic that we put out in the market. Since August last year, we‘ve collected over 18,000 MT of plastic that are repurposed through our cement partners.”

Nestlé Philippines also supports infrastructure for the collection, sorting, and recycling of plastic waste, and has developed school modules, and guide materials for parents and teens on solid waste management endorsed by the National Solid Waste Management Commission.

Nestlé Philippines Supports PCEx and SM Malls’ Plastic Waste Collection Initiative

Nestlé Philippines Supports PCEx and SM Malls’ Plastic Waste Collection Initiative

In a virtual event held recently, Plastic Credit Exchange (PCEx) and SM Malls formally launched their Plastic Waste Collection Program in partnership with Nestlé Philippines. This program aims not only to educate the public on the benefits of plastic waste management but also give them a place where they can bring their plastic waste for proper collection and disposal.

Through the Plastic Waste Collection Program, everyone can contribute to a cleaner environment by dropping off their empty, clean, and dry plastics from 10 am to 5 pm at the blue container van located in participating SM malls such as SM Megamall and SM Mall of Asia. The plastics are properly compacted and arranged before being collected for PCEx to transport to various recycling partners.

Nestlé Philippines supports the initiative in line with its goal of reducing plastic waste and preventing it from ending up in nature.

“At Nestlé Philippines, we are leading with initiatives to tackle plastic waste. By 2025, we aim for our packaging to be recyclable or reusable. To do this, we have been working on packaging innovations, and increasing our efforts to support collection to improve sorting, recovery, and recycling. We are also helping to educate the public about the importance of proper waste management. Recognizing the complexity of the plastic waste issue, we are collaborating with partners to make a bigger impact and accelerate our journey to a waste-free future,” said Nestlé Philippines Chairman and CEO Kais Marzouki.

Last year, Nestlé Philippines achieved a major environmental milestone by becoming the country’s first multinational fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company to attain plastic neutrality. Since August 2020, it has been collecting and co-processing more than the amount of plastic it uses for its packaging. This strongly supports the vision of Nestlé Philippines of preventing its packaging including plastic from ending up in landfills and oceans.

FamiLIGTAS Calls For Increased Attention To GBV Against LBGTQ+

FamiLIGTAS Calls For Increased Attention To GBV Against LBGTQ+

As the nation observes the annual 18-day campaign to end gender-based violence (GBV),FamiLigtas reminds us to also address the violence and discrimination experienced by the LGBTQ+ community.

FamiLigtas is a digital campaign against GBV in the Philippines during the time of COVID-19. But because GBV is most commonly associated with spousal and domestic violence against women, the experiences of violence among lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, and other non-binary individuals are often left unheard.

According to Human Rights Watch, only 15% of Filipinos are living in areas with ordinances against discrimination and violence based on SOGIE. The same report said that the low reporting and intervention of this kind of GBV is caused by the negative messages that the victim-survivors are receiving from authorities.

As the LGBTQ+ community continues to fight for the passage of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill in congress, more and more non-binary people continue to experience discrimination, and even violence, at home and in public spaces. It is with that in mind that we are inviting you to a webinar about the often unreported instances of GBV against LGBTQ+ persons.

Lysol urges Filipinos: “together, we can disinfect to protect”

As part of its mission to “Disinfect to Protect”, Lysol Philippines has released an informative video in its Facebook page, to reinforce its call for Filipinos to remain vigilant against the COVID19 pandemic and join them in the fight against the disease by helping break the chain of infection.

The video, entitled “Together, we can disinfect to protect”, outlines what people can do to protect themselves, their families and communities against the novel coronavirus—practice proper handwashing, refrain from touching the face, observe cough etiquette and social distancing, and clean and disinfect surroundings.

“We are breaking the chain of COVID-19 infection by calling on all Filipinos to join us in our mission and enlisting them in the practice of washing their hands and regularly disinfecting their surroundings, including most touched surfaces, especially in homes. These practices, when integrated into our lives as routines, become powerful weapons through which we can combat COVID-19,” said Gonzalo Balcazar, RB general manager for South East Asia, Hygiene.

Apart from manufacturing disinfectant sprays and multi-purpose household cleaners, Lysol has been involved in studying bacteria and viruses—from the most common, to the most harmful—working with scientific and academic communities and partnering with healthcare institutions and laboratories to test its products against pathogens, to contribute to scientific knowledge on hygiene and infection control.

One recent study involved the novel SARS-CoV-2 strain wherein Lysol maker, RB, commissioned a globally-recognized laboratory to conduct a series of independent tests to assess the effectiveness of the active ingredients and formulations of Lysol disinfectant spray, liquid hand wash, hand sanitizer, and other disinfectant products against the COVID-19.

Recently, Lysol Philippines has also partnered with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) for a “Disinfect to Protect” joint mission wherein the disinfectant brand donated P36 million to build a COVID-19 mass testing laboratory in Cagayan De Oro, and shoulder the COVID19 mass-testing processing fees of 4,500 Filipinos, including front-liners, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Keeping your food products safe from tampering is a must during this Covid-19 pandemic

Keeping your food products safe from tampering is a must during this Covid-19 pandemic

Dine-in at restaurants are now strictly prohibited. Food deliveries and take-outs are on the rise.

Home-cooked meals and dishes are also gaining momentum. A lot of people stuck in their houses are looking for alternative sources of income. Those same people who are stuck in their houses are also hungry to get a taste of the food from the outside world to restore some sense of normalcy in their lives.

But how safe is the food that we order and have been delivered to our home?

Is it safe from tampering and accidental spills?

Delivered food is just placed in food containers. Most of them are not even sealed. Unlike those things that you buy at stores like jams, breads, and other food items.

But why are food deliveries not secured? Is it because Tamper Evident Stickers are costly? Or is it because it’s hard to find ways to secure the containers to be tamper-proof? Keeping food safe from tampering is the best feature of SecureLabels from Dragonfly Printing Services.

With costs for labels reaching as low as 1 peso per piece, securing your food deliveries from accidental spills and tampering has never been easier.

Some common sizes of labels are the following:

Stop opportunistic scammers: Know the basics of what your bank will never do and ask from you

Stop opportunistic scammers: Know the basics of what your bank will never do and ask from you

Stop opportunistic scammers
Know the basics of what your bank will never do and ask from you

Every crisis presents an opportunity. Unfortunately, this holds true even for scammers. They are very opportunistic even during the most trying situations like a pandemic.

While we hear about the ingenuity of a lot of people these days to augment or protect their finances like converting their own kitchen into small-scale bakeries to sell baked goods online, or converting a garment shop to produce and sell face masks, or shifting to a digital business model like an online palengke, scammers have become very creative, as well, in their modus operandi.

From their usual scheme of sending out threatening “deactivation” emails to force bank clients to unwittingly give their personal information and card details, also known as phishing, to launching fake COVID donation drives, scammers are now sending emails and texts that warn clients of unauthorized transactions in their credit or debit cards.

Sounding like what a bank might actually say and do, the email or text would go as far as telling cardholders what items were purchased, where, and when they were bought. But here’s the catch, if a cardholder would like to confirm or reverse such transaction, he or she will have to click a link to an “official” refund page. This link then leads to a FAKE landing page, where clients’ personal bank details are going to be “phished” or stolen if provided.

Truth is, opportunistic scammers are learning how to commit crime by adjusting their schemes to how banks do their advisories. Phishing emails and texts have recently become so professionally written that clients really need to spot fake links and websites than grammatical errors.

Outsmart scammers by taking these reminders to heart

There is, however, no reason to feel helpless. Phishing and vishing (the telephone equivalent of phishing) are still easy to spot if bank clients just go back to the basics of what their banks will never do or ask from them.

First, banks will never send deactivation threats. According to BDO Unibank, banks do not deactivate accounts or ask clients to “verify” via email, text, or call. Banks, it added, will also never send a link, not even to a “refund” page as now being circulated by scammers. These will lead to a fake website where clients’ personal information will be stolen.

Second, banks will also never ask for personal bank details through an embedded link. Reminding its clients and all cardholders as well, BDO said, banks will never ask for card details, such as account number and the CVV (3 digit number at the back of the card). These important details will allow scammers to make unauthorized transactions using other people’s cards.

Third, BDO said, banks will never ask for login details and more importantly the One-Time PIN (OTP). An OTP is sent by a bank once clients successfully log in using their username and password. This is the bank’s final security measure. Providing these details to scammers, is like handing them access to money and credit.

BDO believes that scammers will run out of opportunities if all people are armed with these three basic but very important reminders.
