Safeguard’s SAFEWash, MWF and DepEd Join Hands to Ensure Safer Balik Eskwela

Safeguard’s SAFEWash, MWF and DepEd Join Hands to Ensure Safer Balik Eskwela

Stepping up to ensure that minimum handwashing standards are met for the nationwide reopening of classes, Safeguard’s SAFEwash joined forces with Manila Water Foundation (MWF) and DepEd to hold a P&G Safeguard Brigada Eskwela at the National Orthopedic Hospital School for Crippled Children (NOH SCC) last August 17.

“Balik Eskwela” 2022
After two years of living through the world’s most extended school closure, the Philippines finally reopens its public and private schools.

The resumption of in-person classes was prompted by the challenges brought about by the “digital divide,” or the gap between individuals and their access to digital tools such as the Internet and digital-enabled services and devices. The Philippines Digital Economy Report 2020 of the National Economic Development Authority and the World Bank highlighted that this unequal access to digital resources has affected poor-performing and marginalized students.

To bridge this gap, DepEd's “Oplan Balik Eskwela 2022” engages partner agencies, organizations, and other stakeholders to facilitate a smooth and safe transition back to face-to-face classes.

Back-to-School-Ready with #SAFEWash
Helping to facilitate a successful nationwide school reopening, Safeguard partnered with DepEd and MWF to strengthen the minimum handwashing standards of schools across Metro Manila and other key areas nationwide through SAFEWash program.

Last August 17, this collaboration mounted a successful MWF & Safeguard Brigada Eskwela for the National Orthopedic Hospital School for Crippled Children (NOH SCC), where sinks and hand soaps were provided.

The program also complemented the donations with educational modules and a tutorial session for school staff  to reinforce proper handwashing practice. P&G volunteers also participated to help refurbish the classrooms.

A Huge Step Towards a Safer Normal
To-date, Safeguard’s SAFEWash has already reached 200,000+ students and school staff nationwide.

Celebrating this huge step towards a Safer Normal, Vice President for P&G Beauty Care and Brand Operations, Aldrich Gopal, echoed the Brand’s vision to safeguard the nation's health. “A huge thank you to our partners for helping make this happen. Together, we take this step towards a SAFER normal, directly impacting the lives of our schoolchildren and their families,” he said.

But while this continuing collaboration has already made great strides in ensuring health and hygiene in schools, the SAFEWash program is far from over.

More Helping Hands Needed
Since its launch in 2020, SAFEWash has been equipping schools win against germs and illnesses, as a support to DepEd’s WASH in Schools (WinS) program. WinS is DepEd’s three-star rating system for evaluating public schools’ over-all hygiene and sanitation, where the opportunity to create a culture of proper handwashing is strong.

The project’s goal to uplift the hand hygiene rating of schools all over the Philippines, can be only achieved through sustained help and support. With your continued patronage of Safeguard, we can work hand-in-hand toward a Safer Normal, where proper handwashing culture in schools is built and promoted. After all, safeguarding the students and school staff means safeguarding the future of the nation.

P&G Philippines supports Brigada Eskwela 2022

P&G Philippines supports Brigada Eskwela 2022

Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, whose portfolio has been trusted over the years for its premium health care, home and hygiene products, continues to step up as a force for good by extending efforts to promote proper hygiene and cleanliness in 55 public schools in the National Capital Region (NCR) and supporting the Department of Education’s (DepEd)  Brigada Eskwela (“Back-to-School Brigade”).

The Brigada Eskwela, with this year’s theme, “Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik-Aral,” DepEd’s annual maintenance program that aims to bring together stakeholders to voluntarily participate and contribute time and skills to do repairs, clean-up work and prepare public elementary and secondary schools for the school opening.

Volunteers from P&G went to National Orthopedic Hospital School for Crippled Children in Quezon, City to help with minor maintenance tasks such as cleaning the classroom walls, windows, armchairs, and hallways in preparation for the school’s re-opening of in-person classes this August 2022.

P&G also donated Safeguard foaming hand soap products to 16 Schools Division Offices (SDOs) of DepEd NCR to support and promote proper hygiene education among students and teachers as they return to school face-to-face. This will benefit 75,000 learners and 7,000 teachers across public schools in NCR. P&G’s participation in Brigada Eskwela highlights the Company’s commitment of using its hygiene brands and partnerships to be a force for good and a force for growth for the communities it serves.

#SafeWASH in Schools

As face-to-face classes resume, the need to ensure the health and safety of pupils and teachers becomes more crucial. Aside from its participation and donation of hygiene products in this year’s Brigada Eskwela, P&G Philippines in partnership with Manila Water Foundation, continues to support the Oplan Kalusugan (OK) sa DepEd and WASH in Schools (WinS) programs of the Department of Education by constructing 10-faucet, foot-pedal-operated hygiene facilities, distribution of hygiene supplies, provision of info-education materials, and conduct of hygiene education sessions in over 285 public schools in NCR and Rizal Province.

#SafeWASH in Schools aims to support the safe return of students, teachers, and staff upon resumption of face-to-face classes. This collaboration project aims to improve the WinS readiness of public schools by prioritizing zero-star rated schools under the category of group handwashing facilities in DepEd’s WinS Three Star Approach. To date, there are already 161 NCR and Rizal schools with new multi-faucet hand hygiene facilities, ensuring a healthy school community, WASH-ready and safe from germs and communicable diseases.

Passionate about research? Mapúa student says immersion in USA’s most innovative university a must

Deciding on which college degree to pursue is a process and requires a lot of thinking. And sometimes, your dream profession can be realized even after spending a semester in the university of your choice and being presented with the vast academic opportunities it offers. This has been the case for 24-year-old student of Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering – Master of Science in Biological Engineering joint program Alecsanndra Gonzales.

Mapúa University pioneered the offering of Biological Engineering in the Philippines in 2008. It is one of its ABET-accredited programs with curricula anchored on research and innovation. It offers non-traditional learning opportunities for students to gain their professional advantage, and among these is international experience through an immersion program.

Mapúa’s partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), the most innovative university in the US, supports this kind of learning opportunity through the offering of the summer immersion program to give students a chance to be immersed in ASU’s academic culture and discipline. Gonzales was the first student sent to ASU from Mapúa.

The summer immersion program is an introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals with discussions on the possible innovations to develop to help achieve the goals. It runs for two weeks and hosts students from ASU’s partner schools across the globe. It aims to help widen participants’ perception of global topics and issues through lectures and open discussions, collaborative research activity, and volunteer work. It also allows students to experience the beauty of Arizona with a tour around the ASU campus and a trip to the Grand Canyon.

“Having to meet individuals of different nationalities and culture at an international setting allowed me to realize that we have similarities and differences in terms of the societal problems we are facing. The program made me understand the value of sustainability in innovations and our role as future engineers to meet the goals in our respective cities or countries,” Gonzales shared. “Gaining friends from different fields and culture and the unforgettable Arizona experience are definitely plus factors.”

The culminating activity of the summer immersion program was the Global Launch x Cintana Sustainability and Innovation Pitch Competition where the team of Gonzales was hailed the winner out of the 10 groups. The team came up with Recycle: Pure Planet/RPP, a linear segregation system that will help individuals and businesses manage their waste materials. The application can be used to manage and monitor waste segregation, and in return allows individual users to redeem rewards or points which can be converted into cash or discount coupons and businesses to avail of tax discount for following the waste production and segregation threshold.

Alecsanndra Gonzales (third from left) and her team of international students being awarded for winning the Global Launch x Cintana Sustainability and Innovation Pitch Competition for their solution pitch targeting SDG #12: Sustainable Production and Consumption in Southeast Asia.

The competition allowed the participants to incorporate their learnings about the SDGs and establish that, though they vary in their fields of studies and future professions, they can work together to devise sustainable solutions that are beneficial to communities.

“My teammates are software engineering and international business majors. We tried to incorporate everyone’s fields to come up with RPP. As future engineers, researchers, and business people, we should pave our way towards achieving the goal of making sustainable living possible for everyone through innovations like this one,” shared Gonzales.

For Gonzales, the summer immersion program is something her fellow students should also grab. It is a steppingstone for students like her who aspire to be part of the solution, as it will give them a broader cultural perspective and may inspire them to pursue a career or studies abroad.

“Continuing our growth through exposure to programs and opportunities like the summer immersion program is one of the many ways we can take that are invaluable for us to have a brighter future.”

Just this August, Mapúa begun offering health sciences and business programs in collaboration with ASU, namely, BS Biology, BS Psychology, AB Psychology, BS Accountancy, BS Business Administration (Major in Financial Management, Marketing Management, or Operations Management), and Master of Arts in Psychology. The summer immersion program at ASU is also offered to students of programs of related fields.

Sundried Freshness for All: Wash ALL your clothes in Downy’s #SunnyAllSaDowny Sampayan ng Bayan for FREE

Sundried Freshness for All: Wash ALL your clothes in Downy’s #SunnyAllSaDowny Sampayan ng Bayan for FREE

No more #SanaAll! #SunnyAllSaDowny Sampayan ng Bayan is Free-for-All!

Wash all the fabrics you want with Downy for FREE at the biggest community laundry get-together, #SunnyAllSaDowny Sampayan ng Bayan.

Happening this September 10 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Barangay Palingon, Taguig City –Tipas Elementary School Basketball Court, the barangay-wide event also boasts a jam-packed entertainment program hosted by Kaladkaren and Tart Carlos. Live performances from Sam Conception and Leah Patricio among other familiar faces from Tiktok will bring in even more sunny vibes. Booths overflowing with freebies and exciting raffle prizes await everyone who will join.

No More Raining On Your Parade
For the first time in a while, Downy will be holding an on-ground community event. At the Sampayan ng Bayan, anyone can bring up to 6kg worth of laundry and wash them with Downy for free.

The event comes at an opportune time now that drying our clothes under the sun has become nearly impossible. The rainy season has left most households with no choice but to dry their laundry indoors most days. Since clothes are not properly ventilated and dried, bacteria build up, leading to the musty, kulob smell.

Sundried Freshness Made Possible
The solution? Downy with Deep Action Antibac – Downy’s best-ever Kontra-Kulob Technology! Downy Kontra Kulob not only gives fabrics irresistible softness, but also brings Sundried Freshness to every load, ensuring that everyone is protected from kulob!

As we enter the rainy season, make it your laundry habit to wash all your fabrics with Downy. Since we have been spending most of our time at home, it is important to make sure that every piece of cloth and fabric, including our pambahays and even our furniture covers, is protected with the long-lasting Sundried Fresh scent of Downy. By doing so, we can keep the rainy-day blues away and ensure that everyone’s mood is bright and sunny at home.

Beating the Kulob Away
Here are 3 steps you can take to ensure that your family gets ultimate protection from kulob. From organizing your laundry to storing it, here’s how you can kulob-proof your clothes:

1.    Sort your laundry –  Some of our laundry may require extra attention, especially if it includes damp items like bath towels. Keep in mind that the longer clothes remain damp with sweat and dirt, the more germs will grow. For damp clothes, it’s best to wash them separately and wash them as soon as possible.

2.    Wash your clothes with fabric conditioner – Downy Antibac Kontra Kulob not only strengthens fabric, but also brings Sundried Freshness to every load, ensuring that your whole household is protected from kulob this rainy season.

3.    Store your clothes properly – Avoid storing your clothes in places where bacteria can grow and damage them, such as your bathroom or basement. To keep your garments in good condition, keep them in a clean, dry, and cool environment that is free of direct sunlight.

Learn more about how you can protect your household from kulob by joining Downy’s #SunnyAllSaDowny Sampayan ng Bayan! You can also tune in on the day itself by getting live updates from the IG stories of our hosts, Kaladkaren, and Tart Carlos. Pass on the excitement to your family, friends, and ka-barangay, and together, #MagBANGOngBuhaysaDowny.
