Attendees learned 3 ways different ways to do more together from home: low-waste ways to cut down on consumption, proper waste segregation and composting!

Be a waste watcher

Before we’re able to reduce the waste that we consume (plastics, especially), we must first assess the amount of waste we produce and what mostly make up the contents of our trashcans. Ms. Oposa recommended using templates such as SPS’ Waste Watch Report Card to keep track of what products and items we usually use and dispose and assess what we can lessen or replace moving forward. Practice low-waste habits

Throughout the sessions, the attendees were able to learn tips and tricks to reduce their plastic waste consumption. These are as simple as buying in bulk when doing the groceries to cut the amount of plastic packaging, opting to purchase products that are more sustainable and eco-friendly, and using reusable alternatives to plastics, among others.

 

Segregate your waste

Segregation plays a big part in diverting plastic waste away from the environment because this creates higher value for plastics and gives them a higher chance for recovery and recycling. There are three main categories of waste: recyclables, biodegradable, and residuals. For recyclables and residuals with potential for recycling, it’s important to make sure that the items are clean and dry before dropping off to collection points to make the recycling process much easier.

 

When it comes to their journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle, Ms. Oposa advised the attendees to aim for progress, not perfection. “When we aim for perfection, there’s a tendency for us to get overwhelmed and when we get overwhelmed, parang nagkaka-analysis paralysis tayo and we don’t know how to act from there. But if we aim for progress, we can focus on one or two things first, do it well and consistently, and before you know it, it’s part of your lifestyle already. You just keep doing it and then you'll see other people doing it as well. We are all multiplying our environmental practices,” she said.

Different groups from parents, professionals and the youth attended the webinars to learn more about how we can do more together for the planet.

Four things Robi Domingo learned to prioritize in the new normal

 

Host and youth advocate Robi Domingo has experienced his fair share of challenges this past year. Just like most, the stress of the pandemic took a significant toll on him and his family.

“It came to a point that I asked myself if I made the right decision not to pursue medicine. When everyone needed a frontliner, why didn’t I become a doctor?” Robi shared.

The situation taught him certain things that many would take for granted before the pandemic happened. Now, Robi found ways to keep himself productive and healthy, and he continued to use his platform for good. Here are four things he learned to prioritize even more:

 

1. Staying physically healthy and fit

Because his parents are frontliners, Robi admitted they were scared of the virus coming to their home. To ensure everyone's health, they are medicine-ready, focused on staying fit, and have set up automated alcohol dispensers in various rooms. 3. Taking up new hobbies

While many Filipinos—his dad for instance—have become plant parents to stay productive at home, Robi went back to playing the piano to relax. His mom usually asks him to learn and play songs from K-drama shows like Goblin and Crash Landing On You. He also brings up how important it is to find hobbies to recharge and refresh one’s mind, especially during stressful times.

 

4. Making a positive impact

As a public personality, Robi learned the power of using his platform to spread awareness and encourage the youth to make good choices, especially with the upcoming elections. “Beyond protecting ourselves, registering to vote resonates with the youth now. I want them to realize that the power is really in our hands,” he said.

 

Robi is also passionate about supporting farmers and sustainability.
