Shopee continues to delight shoppers with exciting activities 

Shopee created engaging and unique experiences for shoppers this 9.9 Super Shopping Day with non-stop entertainment featuring popular international and local celebrities, exciting games, and attractive rewards. 

Live streaming continued to be a key part of the online shopping experience and was the entertainment channel of choice for many shoppers. In the three weeks leading up to 9 September, shoppers spent over 24 million hours watching a series of different livestreams on Shopee Live, including an exclusive interview with Jackie Chan and exciting performances by leading K-Pop group TWICE. 

Shoppers also spent more time playing their favorite games on Shopee Prizes. One of Shopee’s signature games, Shopee Shake, had a unique Jackie Chan-themed twist, making it a crowd favorite with 440 million shakes recorded. Other games such as Spin & Win and Shopee Farm continued to be well-received with a total of 4.5 billion gameplays recorded on Shopee Prizes across the campaign period.

Filipinos welcomed the start of the year-end shopping season with enthusiasm. At its peak, over 9.5 million items were sold in just an hour in Metro Manila alone. The Mega Midnight Sale, held from 12 AM to 2 AM, also saw a 3X uplift in shoppers compared to an average day as Filipinos snapped up many unbeatable deals. 

• FIlipinos are purchasing a wide variety of products, ranging from health essentials to home improvement products - This 9.9 Super Shopping Day, consumers primarily shopped for Home & Living items to spruce up their homes and Health & Personal Care essentials to keep them safe and healthy. Shoppers prioritized stocking up on a variety of face masks with over 1.9 million items sold. Products such as wallpaper decor also saw over 300,000 items sold. Consumers preferred to shop for home and fashion finds locally, with Filipino sellers WILLET, grocerysale.no1, and ABUBOT_PH selling the most number of items. 

• Shoppers enjoyed the biggest deals from personal care and tech brands - Uni-Care, Xiaomi, and NIVEA emerged as the top brands with the most number of orders. Filipinos enjoyed flash deals, discounts up to 50% off, and freebies from these brands.

• ShopeePay provides seamless service to Filipinos, online and offline - Shopee saw an increase in Filipinos embracing digital payment methods for greater convenience, security, and value, both online and offline. The rainy season may be a sweet relief from the hot and humid Philippine weather, but with it comes laundry troubles because there’s hardly any sun for clothes to dry. Make use of spin dryers. Because drying your clothes in the sun is not always an option during rainy season, using the washing machine’s spin dryer is your best bet as it makes wringing your clothes—to dry quickly—easier. If you’re looking for a durable washing machine that can withstand heavy laundry load, Midea’s new line of Twin Tub Washing Machine is a great option. Leave space for clothes while drying. When you’re done washing, don’t place your damp clothes too close or over one another as it will only delay drying time and result in an unpleasant damp smell. Be sure to leave enough space between clothes to dry evenly and naturally.

Hang in a well-ventilated room. When you have no choice but to dry your clothes indoors, use the spin dryer a couple of times and hang them in a portable drying rack. To help them dry even more quickly, make sure you can hang them in a well-ventilated room.

Use fabric conditioners. Fabric conditioners help avoid the damp odor smell on clothes. However, this does not compensate for deeply washed clothes. Before using your preferred fabric conditioner, make sure to pre-soak your clothes with detergent or vinegar and baking soda for at least 30 minutes to remove stains and smell on clothes.

Iron your laundry. If you find that you still have some damp clothes left, another option you can do is to iron your clothes dry. You can even use scented wrinkle release sprays to further ensure that your clothes smell clean and fresh.

Visible role models can help inspire more women leaders

 

Potential women leaders have been limited because of outdated gender norms and lack of mentoring and support. The visibility of successful female role models for girls and women is vital, particularly in fields that have long been dominated by men, like finance and technology. 

 

In the webinar entitled, “Is VC Funding for Women Founders Getting Any Better?” organized by DealStreetAsia, a Singapore-based financial news website, women leaders shared their insights on the gender disparity in venture capital (VC) funding and how women are capable of building their startups and becoming a leader. Among the panelists was GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon who shared the importance of visual role modeling in order to address the issue of a lack of female leaders.

 

“Leading by example is important. Women founders need to be shown more to people,” said Sazon.

 

Although finance and technology companies are mainly dominated by men and making it in these industries may seem intimidating to women, Sazon helped millions of Filipinos during the pandemic through the top fintech company, GCash. The Philippines’ leading mobile wallet company currently has 2.5 million merchants and a 46 million subscriber base, which is equivalent to more than 40 percent of the population having a GCash account. When Sazon was just starting her career at Globe, the top telecommunications company in the Philippines, she said it was initially dominated by men but now, women leaders have also emerged in the company. 

 

“We're opening up not just the tech industry but the fintech industry as well to women. Fintech is a good industry for women to thrive because women are naturally good decision makers and problem fixers,” said Sazon. “We have to create more ‘I want to be like her moments.’ Someone just has to pave the way for it,” she added. 

 

In order to have more women leaders, Sazon said that mentoring should start at a young age. She said it’s vital to guide women in high school about the right college course to take, the job that’s a good fit for them, and the right skill set in starting a business. “Young girls should be given more visual cues. As we provide them these visual cues and mentoring, we should be there to continuously guide them,” she said. 

 

She added, “We need to be shown to more people so we get to a point that we are ‘ordinary,’ that it becomes a normal thing for women to become successful with their decisions.”

 

Sazon said that encouraging more women to lead could be as easy as creating chat groups for women or building an organization to support them. She also shared that she’s fortunate to have had great mentors on her journey.

 

The presence of women in leadership roles and the opportunity to network with them is crucial in helping motivate other women to advance in their careers. These role models will ultimately inspire women to aim higher so they can then become an example to younger generations as well. 

 

Sazon also encouraged women to trust their capability, articulate their purpose and believe in it.
