40 MILLION FILIPINOS and GROWING: GCash strengthens partnership with the public sector to promote digital financial inclusion for all

To fast-track economic recovery amid the pandemic, public and private sectors must unite and work together to achieve a more inclusive financial ecosystem for all Filipinos. This is the vision behind “One with the Nation: Forging Public-Private Partnerships Towards Digital Inclusion in the Philippines,” a webinar organized by GCash, the country’s no. 1 mobile wallet app in collaboration with various national government agencies and local government units (LGUs).

The webinar featured distinguished speakers from both the  public  and private sectors led by  Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Gov. Benjamin Diokno, Makati Mayor Abby Binay, Congressman Jose Enrirque Garcia, DSWD Director Wayne Belizar, Bureau of Treasury of the Philippines OIC Deputy Treasurer Ed Marino,  BSP Deputy Dir. for Payment Systems Atty. Leah M. Irao, GCash President and CEO Martha Sazon, GCash Vice President for Enterprise Jose Luis Reyes and GCash AVP and Head of  Public Sector & Partnerships Cathlyn Pavia.

GCash President and CEO Martha Sazon

“Our partnerships with the private sector have provided us with a wide network to reach more customers and develop more relevant financial services and products,” said Martha Sazon, GCash president and chief executive officer. “But in order to truly reach the unbanked and underserved communities, we look to the public sector with their expertise and resources. Together, we can really make a difference in the lives of Filipinos.”

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Gov. Benjamin Diokno

The event opened with a Keynote Message from BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno on “Digital Financial Inclusion: Impacting the Lives of Millions of Filipinos”. In his message to the participants, Governor Diokno underscored the importance of making financial inclusion a reality for every Filipino in the country. This was followed by a panel discussion on “Digital Infrastructure: The Journey Starts Today!” led by BSP deputy director Atty Leah M. Irao and Cong. Jose Enrique Garcia. Atty. Irao and Congressman Garcia discussed the value of digitalization to promote the safety and security of Filipinos even beyond the pandemic.

Congressman Jose Enrirque Garcia

A talk on the importance of outlining a strategic path towards digital transformation was discussed next by Pavia in “Digital Roadmap: Are We Ready to Innovate?”. In her talk, Pavia emphasized the critical value of implementing digitalization in phases, and how digital solutions can be seamlessly integrated in order to create a hybrid approach and to facilitate smoother adoption.

In his talk on “Digital Manual: 101 Opportunities to Move Forward!,” Director Marino discussed the long-term benefits of creating sound policies and guidelines, ensuring transparency during digital transformation.

Makati Mayor Abby Binay

Highlighting trailblazing partnerships going cashless, Makati Mayor Abby Binay led a panel entitled “Digital Headstart: Kaya Mo Pilipino!” In Makati, data of its constituents were collected and used to create the Makatizen ID card and open GCash accounts. The card serves as a valid ID that can be used to avail of government services, and a debit card to withdraw in any Bancnet ATM or use in Mastercard-accepting merchants. Likewise, Makati also uses GCash to disburse the salaries of employees, and allowances of senior citizens, and other financial assistance such as Maka-tulong. With Mayor Binay was DSWD Dir. Delizer who in turn shared the agency’s groundbreaking SAP disbursement program last year.

This successful partnership at the height of the pandemic last year was the collaboration between GCash and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for safer distribution of funds for its Social Amelioration Program. GCash was able to distribute more than P16 billion to at least 2 million Filipinos, saving the government about 952 days and around P52 million. GCash continues to support DSWD in its Assistance for Individuals Under Crisis Situation program on a monthly basis.

The mobile app has also partnered with the Social Security System (SSS). Since February, SSS has enabled GCash as an option for receiving benefits through PESOnet. The app has provided SSS members an option to pay their monthly contribution payments via the app’s Pay Bills feature. Likewise for PAG-IBIG, contributions are also conveniently accepted via Pay Bills and Web Pay.

Closing the webinar was GCash VP for Enterprise Jose Luis Reyes who stressed the importance of financial inclusion and expressed optimism that despite today’s challenges, there is a clear way forward to achieve BSP’s vision and make Filipino lives better every day.

These programs are proof that strong partnerships between the private and public sectors are crucial in successfully bringing the benefits of digitalization and financial inclusion to Filipinos at a time when they need it most.

 Summary:

·         A strategic webinar that highlights the importance of private-public sector collaboration in achieving financial inclusion for Filipinos, featuring speakers including BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno, Congressman Jose Enique Garcia and Makati Mayor Abby Binay. The event gathered hundreds of society leaders, LGU officials, business sector executives and the media to discuss viable digital financial solutions for the country.

·         Successful pioneering partnerships for cashless programs such as Makati LGU-GCash Makatizen ID card,  SSS-GCash partnership for fast and secure disbursement of SSS benefits; and the safe and timely distribution of funds for the DSWD’s Social Amelioration Program through GCash were discussed as best practices.

·         GCash looks forward to collaborating with more LGUs and other national government agencies to promote digital synergy and identify financial solutions that will positively impact the lives of  millions of Filipinos nationwide, especially during this pandemic period.

Petron Blaze Racing Team Wins 12-hour Endurance Cup

Petron Blaze Racing Team Wins 12-hour Endurance Cup

Attests to Winning Combination of Petron Fuels and Lubricants

The Petron Blaze Racing Team emerged as Class 2 champions in the recently concluded Petron Kalayaan Cup, a 12-hour endurance race held at the Clark International Speedway to celebrate Philippine Independence Day last June 12.

Driving a vintage Honda Civic EK with a surplus engine, the Petron Blaze Racing Team — headed by pilot-businessman-race car driver Mon Dimapilis, along with teammates Jevoy Moreno, Mikko Rayo, Moses Dumaguing, Powee Base, and Rod Chang — bested the other cars in its class by accomplishing 241 laps within the 12-hour period.

With Petron Blaze 100 as the official fuel for the endurance run, all competitors were able to benefit from the high-performance advantages offered by this 100-octane pure gasoline. What distinguished the Petron Blaze Racing Team was the added advantage of also using Petron Blaze Racing engine oil as lubricant, creating the perfect winning combination.

According to Dimapilis, they started using Petron Blaze Racing oil since their car preparation and shakedown in early 2021 to properly tune the engine and optimize its performance.

During the race itself, the team was confident that the engine would be able to handle the extreme conditions of the 12-hour endurance run due to its outstanding properties in terms of thermal stability, viscosity, and overall engine protection.

Dimapilis notes, “In the past, using other oil brands, we needed to top up around 3-liters within 12-hours. Using Petron Blaze Racing oil, we only needed to add 1-liter. For everyday use and in practical terms, this means that Petron Blaze Racing is also actually more economical because it is more long-lasting while delivering superior performance. We did not experience any knocking, pinging, or detonation. The engine was able to endure the high rpms and track heat, while maintaining efficiency. More importantly, we were able to maximize the high-octane formulation of Petron Blaze 100 through consistent fuel burn.”

He adds, “Considering that we were using an old surplus engine, we were still confident that with the protection of Petron Blaze Racing oil, our engine would not overheat and would continue to run smoothly. Matched with the high-performance Petron Blaze 100 gasoline, we could feel the instantaneous engine response, smooth acceleration, and greater power.”

Testifying to the perfect winning combination of Petron Blaze 100 gasoline and Petron Blaze Racing engine oils, the team was very pleased with their strong showing in the 12-hour Endurance Run and are optimistic that they will do well in their motorsport campaign this year.

According to Dimapilis, “Using Petron Blaze Racing oil, we have a very healthy engine with the same power output when dyno-tested before and after the punishing 12-hour endurance run. This means there was no degradation in engine performance. Plus, of course, using Petron radiator coolant, we also added an extra layer of protection to our cooling system.”

Nestlé PH ramps up solid waste management education for World Oceans Day

There is no denying that one of the greatest environmental challenges the world faces today is the plastic waste crisis. Globally, the Philippines is the third largest source of ocean plastic waste.

Nestlé PH ramps up solid waste management education for World Oceans Day

Fortunately, more and more Filipinos are becoming more conscious of their lifestyles and are starting to adopt sustainable choices and decisions to reduce their carbon footprint and plastic consumption.

Companies like Nestlé Philippines are intensifying their initiatives to address the plastic waste crisis in the country.

“As a food and beverage manufacturing company, Nestlé Philippines is committed to tackle plastic waste as an urgent priority in all stages of its value chain. We are also working to drive new understanding and behavior on waste and waste management and are supporting both our consumers and our employees in their efforts to live a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Arlene Tan-Bantoto, Nestlé PH SVP and head of public affairs, communications and sustainability.

In time for World Oceans Day, Nestlé PH launched the Isabuhay sa Bahay Challenge to empower its employees to take a more active role in helping care for the planet by accomplishing different tasks. Through this initiative, the company and its employees will strengthen their promise to the planet that they made during their Net Zero Fair last April.

In order to prepare them for the challenge, employees attended a training workshop facilitated by the Executive Director and Chief Mermaid of Save Philippine Seas, Ms. Anna Oposa, that focused on zero-waste lifestyle tips, an introduction to segregation, and composting – three important areas that can help them practice responsible solid waste management at home.

“Every lifestyle change you make depends on your context, resources, and capacity. Whatever you are able to commit to is already a step in the right direction,” Ms. Oposa said.

Participants’ takeaways from the session included practical ways to cut down waste at home; the importance of segregation, and the types of waste that fall under the recyclable, residual, and biodegradable categories; and lastly, the methods and benefits of composting. More than just practicing these activities at home, Ms. Oposa encouraged the attendees to extend their efforts to the community by supporting sustainability efforts of corporations and organizations like Nestlé, reaching out to people in authority when needed, and influencing others by example.

For Nestlé PH, addressing the complex challenge of plastic waste requires support from key sectors and partners, including consumers.

Towards making a waste-free future a reality, the company is engaged in various efforts that encourage a change in behavior. Among these are the development of solid waste management education modules endorsed by the National Solid Waste Management Commission. These modules have been rolled out to thousands of public schools for grades 1-10 students through Nestlé’s partnership with the Department of Education under the Nestlé Wellness Campus program. Condensed versions of the modules are also available to parents and teens for use at home.

Nestlé has also established collection points in collaboration with its partners where people can take their plastic waste for further processing, so they do not end up in landfills. In partnership with Plastic Credit Exchange, collection points have been set up in SM Malls in MOA, SM North Edsa, and SM Fairview.

Know more about Nestle Philippines’ initiatives as well as how to be a Kasambuhay for the Environment by visiting nestle.com.ph where you can download a copy of the solid waste management modules and view a list of other locations where you can drop off your used soft plastics.

Shopee reveals 4 types of Filipino online shoppers, offers something for everyone this 7.7 Mid-Year Sale

Shopee reveals 4 types of Filipino online shoppers, offers something for everyone this 7.7 Mid-Year Sale

42% of Filipinos surveyed are Sulit Shoppers, who are driven by the best deals and prices online

A survey conducted by Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, revealed four types of online shoppers in the Philippines and their motivations for shopping online.

Shopee surveyed more than 3,000 Filipinos and found that value is the most important factor for online shoppers, with 42% of respondents stating that they are driven by the best deals and prices. 71% of them are females, ranging from 18 to 34 years of age.

There is also an emerging segment of consumers who prioritize shopping from their favored brands online. More than half of these brand lovers are around 25 years old, showing how brand loyalty is becoming key to the online shopping experience for younger demographics.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “The mid-year shopping season is an exciting time for Shopee. As more Filipinos go online to fulfill their shopping needs, we are also seeing more diverse preferences and shopping habits emerge. This is why we consistently listen to our users’ feedback and improve our features, services, and products to serve their  needs. Our 7.7 Mid-Year Sale is no different and comes packed with highlights such as the Payday Sale, ShopeePay Day, and other exciting promotions to deliver more value, variety, and fun to all shoppers.”

The four key types of Filipino online shoppers are:

1) The Sulit Shopper - Decisive shoppers who hunt for the best deals

42% of respondents are Sulit Shoppers. They prioritize finding the best deals and prices before making an online purchase. These shoppers are patient and take the time to research products, but act quickly when they discover deals they like.

Key characteristics:

Decisive buying: 66% browse a maximum of just five items before making a purchase

Deals seeking: 62% don’t typically plan purchases in advance—they shop whenever they see big discounts on products they’re eyeing

Regular shopping: Half of them buy something online at least twice a month

Sulit Shoppers can rejoice at the 7.7 Mid-Year Sale, which offers non-stop deals and discounts. They can save money on shipping, get discounts, and claim cashback at the Vouchers Sale on July 6. During the 7.7 period, they can also tap on the Vouchers button on the Shopee homepage for one-stop access to the best deals.

2) The Shop-and-Go Consumer - Shoppers who enjoy the convenience of delivery to their doorstep

For a lot of Filipinos, online shopping’s main draw is convenience. 17% of shoppers surveyed turn to online shopping for its ease and safety. More than half of the shoppers in this community are 30 years old. They know what they want to buy and do not necessarily spend extra time on the app, but will often make impulse purchases if they stumble upon good deals.

Key characteristics:

Quick decision-making: 64% browse through a maximum of five listings before they find what they're looking for

Proactive shopping: Almost one in two do their own research on products by either searching online or chatting with sellers

Frequent shopping: 45% shop online twice a month on average, making them one of the most frequent purchasers

Shop-and-Go Consumers can take advantage of Free Shipping on Shopee’s home page. They’ll also love the convenience of ShopeePay, Shopee’s built-in e-wallet. On ShopeePay Day this July 1, they can enjoy ShopeePay-exclusive rewards, such as free shipping, cashback, and ₱1 deals.

3) The Budol Shopper - Window shoppers who can also be spontaneous buyers

Making up 14% of respondents, the Budol Shopper refers to window shoppers who value variety and choice of products. Compared to the Sulit Shopper, the Budol Shopper browses more items on average, and are also more likely to spontaneously check out a product that catches their eye.

Key characteristics:

Impulsive buying: 63% will buy an item because they felt like doing so at the moment

Frequent browsing: 27% of window shoppers usually browse up to 15 items before each purchase

This 7.7, Budol Shoppers can window shop to their hearts’ content across Shopee’s themed days such as Home Tech Sale on June 24, Home & Outdoors Sale on June 25, Kids & Babies Sale on June 26, and Apparel & Shoes Sale on June 27. Each sale offers a huge selection of discounted products from popular categories.

4) The Suki Buyer - Shoppers who have a good eye for brands

Suki Buyers make up 12% of respondents, and they shop online because they can find their favorite brands easily. Unlike Sulit Shoppers, shoppers who prioritize finding the best value, brand fans are less price-sensitive. Instead, they value having a large variety of brands to choose from, as well as accessing perks and loyalty points from brands they follow.

Key characteristics:

Regular shopping from brands: 62% of them purchase from their favorite brands as frequently as twice a month

Brand familiarity: About 1 in 4 follow their favorite brands on social media in order to stay informed of latest product launches

Suki Buyers will enjoy the RB Super Brand Day until June 23, Vivo Super Brand Day from June 27-28, and Olay Super Brand Day from June 28-30, which all offer exclusive deals from well-loved brands on Shopee Mall. Suki Buyers can also get exclusive perks from their favorite brands, such as 30% off vouchers, at the Shopee Mall Sale this June 29.

A father's dream: Legacy of giving life and hope to communities

(L-R) Nards Garcia - VP for Sales and Marketing; Lito Garcia - VP for HR, Admin, and Finance; Adrian Garcia- VP for Supply Chain; Pruds Garcia - President; Doods Garcia - VP for Manufacturing; (center, seated) Tatay Felix Garcia, founder

It is every father’s dream to provide for their family. It’s a simple yet profound aspiration that takes more than just hard work, discipline, and determination. Though this work seems endless and even more challenging, fathers wouldn’t have it any other way as they embrace this life-long mission.

A father's dream: Legacy of giving life and hope to communities

Felix Garcia

Felix Garcia, the patriarch and founder of Mekeni Food Corporation, has also dreamed of this simple dream for his family.

Fondly called Tatang Felix by people around him, he’s a visionary; an educator; and a persevering father and loving husband all rolled into one.

“Life was hard then as it is now. During those times, I only had one thing in mind: How will I be able to provide food on our table and prepare my children for a better future? I kept dreaming of that dream—of a better future for my family. I know that this is a typical dream of every father in the world, but do you know what makes that dream special? I put my heart into it as I envision it,” says Tatang Felix.

Tatang Felix isn’t the type who would surrender in the face of adversities. Since he was young, he worked day and night in order to finance his studies. He had different jobs, including being a ‘servidor’ in order to fulfill his dream.

In 1956, after graduating with a degree in education, he started teaching in an Aeta community in Porac, Pampanga. There, he pioneered in giving equal education opportunity to the Aeta community and went out of his way to give health support to them through the assistance of the Municial Health Office.

After he was transferred to Balubad Elementary School in 1957, he continued fulfilling his mission in instilling the value of education to his students—a value which he imparted to his five sons Adrian, Pruds, Lito, Doods, and Nards.

Driven by his dream to give the best to his family, Tatang Felix took a leap of faith. With only a hundred chickens, two piglets, and a pen, he started his small poultry and piggery business. His five sons back then were the ones assisting him and wife Meding in doing household chores while selling ice candy and eggs within their neighborhood and in the market.

Because of his hard work and unrelenting faith, the small business started to flourish and became a full-blown business. This was the beginning of what is now known as one of the biggest and most awarded food manufacturing companies in the Philippines—the Mekeni Food Corporation.

“If there is one quality that best describes him, it would be persistence,” shares his first-born son Adrian who is the VP for Supply Chain at Mekeni. “His persistence is deeply rooted in his faith, and he was able to overcome everything because he never stops believing.”

However, Mekeni’s story wasn’t a smooth-sailing ride. The company was a witness to the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo and how it almost wiped out their community in 1991. Tatang Felix, being always caring for the people around him, urged his three sons who were working abroad to come back to the Philippines and help their community get back on its feet.

Today, Mekeni Food Corporation is a multi-awarded meat processing plant producing tons of meat products daily. From an enterprise that simply aimed to provide a steady income for his family, Mekeni is also able to offer livelihood not only to the Cabalens but to the people in neighboring cities and provinces as well.

(L-R) Nards Garcia - VP for Sales and Marketing; Lito Garcia - VP for HR, Admin, and Finance; Adrian Garcia- VP for Supply Chain; Pruds Garcia - President; Doods Garcia - VP for Manufacturing; (center, seated) Tatay Felix Garcia, founder

Now 94 years old, Tatay Felix remains passionate in inspiring the younger generation to have a goal-, family- and God-centric life. He loves spending time with his family, especially with his precious grandchildren, over a hearty meal or bond with them through music. He also continues to support deserving students by providing financial assistance and scholarships.

Up to this day, Tatay Felix still can’t believe that his small dream—a simple father’s dream—of providing for his family has turned into a legacy of giving hope and opportunities to its communities.

“Mekeni’s story is not just mine anymore, it has become our people’s because they’ve embraced my vision of uplifting the lives of our communities and beyond. This is what truly makes us Mekeni—a God-centered, family-oriented, and purpose-driven company that is fully committed to that lifetime mission,” said the Garcia patriarch.

Discover the Advanced Way to Relieve Cough in Just 3 Days!

With the threat of the pandemic still very much present in the country, a simple cough is enough to cause heightened anxiety these days because it is one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19. Unlike before where this matter was usually taken lightly by most, the current situation has people rushing to find a solution when the first signs of a cough arise.

Discover the Advanced Way to Relieve Cough in Just 3 Days!

Coughs are our bodies’ natural response to expel unwanted organisms from our lungs caused by allergies, irritants, asthma, and the most common of all, viruses. Although coughs caused by common viruses go away in time, it's better to treat them as soon as possible and equip our bodies with added immunity for faster recovery.

In the Philippines, only one cough medicine combines the trusted formulation of Solmux with an essential mineral for faster recovery: Solmux Advance, the only one with Zinc! This unique and powerful combination of Carbocisteine and Zinc is proven effective to reduce cough bouts in as fast as 3 days, compared to the usual 10 to 14 days of recovery. The addition of Zinc to Carbocisteine not only liquifies sticky phlegm, but also improves the body’s immunity for faster recovery from cough.

Carbocisteine is scientifically proven to treat cough with phlegm and other respiratory tract disorders, and have properties that inhibit viruses and bacteria, making it more difficult for microorganisms to cause infections. The right levels of Zinc, on the other hand, can help speed up recovery from infections like the common cold through its action on immunity. It also activates white blood cells to help the body fight off viruses including coronaviruses.

Given the continued increase in COVID-19 cases every day plus the occurrence of other viral respiratory infections, Filipinos can protect themselves and their loved ones with a more advanced 2-in-1 solution for faster cough relief.

In the past 5 years, Landers has won the hearts of Filipino families with its array of top-notch products, some of which are not found in other local stores. Aside from that, they have also gained a reputation for offering awesome perks that truly level up the shopping experience.

For starters, Landers pioneered giving fuel discounts of up to P10 off per liter through their Landers-Caltex gas stations. Members also enjoy the lowest priced medicines at Capital Care, the superstore’s in-house pharmacy, and free haircut at Federal Barbers, their in-house barbershop.

Serving delicious meals and drinks is also one of Landers’ specialties. Coffee lovers can grab their favorite brew at the in-house café, Doppio, while those with big post-shopping cravings will surely enjoy Landers Central’s New York-inspired menu.

Those who cannot visit the physical stores have the option to shop online at www.landers.ph, and the orders will be conveniently delivered to their home within their preferred two-hour timeslot.
