Best in Pinoy blogs recognized in 1st BDO Blogger Awards

BDO Unibank recognized the best online content creators in the first-ever BDO Blogger Awards.

The BDO Blogger Awards honors bloggers and influencers for sharing useful information, insights, and positivity with their followers and viewers. The awards honor bloggers’ contributions not only in spreading awareness about the bank’s advocacies, but also in initiating important public discussions for a more financially-inclusive industry through content creation.

The Awards feature two segments: the recognition ceremony, which awards the top-performing content creators in terms of the quality of content they published online from 2020 to 2021; and the content creation contest—a thematic activity that challenges participants to come up with unique and creative ways to talk about various topics.

This year, BDO challenged participants to discuss the bank’s innovative digital solutions, which served as an alternative option for clients to perform their bank transactions especially during the height of the pandemic.

Ever wonder how Marian juggles multiple roles in life and still makes time to be a doting mom and wife? The Shopee brand ambassador opens up about motherhood in time for Mother’s Day.

Marian prioritizes being a mom above all else
Marian wears many hats as an A-list actress, thriving entrepreneur, and hands-on wife and mother. Despite this, she ensures that she never gets too busy for family. She still dedicates most of her time at home, bonding with her kids and taking care of the household needs. “Alam mo dapat kung kailan ka need ng mga anak mo, ng asawa mo, [You should know when your family needs you] because at the end of the day, family should always come first.” At the end of the day, being a mom is Marian’s most important role in life and her children are her number one fans. Raising her kids to be kind, responsible, and compassionate people is the biggest goal she’s striving to achieve.

Marian rises to the challenges of motherhood
Marian acknowledges the difficulties that come with being a mom, and these have been amplified even more over the pandemic. It’s been tough for her kids who are both at the age of exploration and want to understand what’s happening outside their home. The Shopee superstar shares, “We had to talk to them and explain that there are a lot of changes and limitations because of this pandemic, but still reassured them that things would get better.” With the situation easing up in the last few months, Marian and Dingdong are happy to finally be able to have their kids go out more, meet their loved ones, and travel as a family.

Marian encourages moms to make the most of Shopee’s convenience and variety
Shopee has been Marian’s go-to for her family’s needs and home budols these last few years. She admits to being an impulsive, but happy shopper, adding to cart and checking out all sorts of items that spruce up different parts of her home. “Minsan talaga wala ka nang time na lumabas at mamili para sa sarili or sa pamilya mo kahit gustuhin mo [sometimes we don’t have time to go out and shop for ourselves or for the family even if we want to]. Shopee is very reliable and convenient because with just a few clicks, you get to shop for anything you need and want, all in one place,” says Marian.

Moms in Tech: How these Mothers at Shopee Unlocked Success in a Fast-Paced Industry

Moms in Tech: How these Mothers at Shopee Unlocked Success in a Fast-Paced Industry

With the rapid growth of e-commerce, more women are exploring the tech industry and finding success online. Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, continues to provide members of its platform with the support needed to thrive in tech. In time for Mother’s Day, three mothers share their experiences on how they ventured out of their comfort zones and into e-commerce. Karen, Primarose, and Glenda are a testament to what working mothers in tech are capable of achieving –  whether they are riders, livestream partners, or employees of Shopee.

Karen: Homegrown Shopee Leader

Karen: Homegrown Shopee Leader
Having previously worked in the operations side of the FMCG industry, Karen Perez, a wife and mother to two daughters, made the switch to join Shopee and become its first employee in the Philippines seven years ago to lead its Operations Team. She had hesitations, but she knew that being part of the tech industry would help her develop even more as a professional. “I already had one daughter and was pregnant with my youngest by the time I joined Shopee, and I had apprehensions about joining a young company. Eventually, I accepted the opportunity because I was excited to be part of the growing e-commerce sector.”

She recently took on a new role as the Head of People at Shopee Philippines. For those around her, this comes as no surprise as she has always approached leadership by building personal relationships in the workplace. She went from dealing with the backend aspects of the business to focusing her time to caring for people and their well-being. Karen shares, “I am grateful that my unique skill sets are recognized and I am given all these opportunities to grow within and lead the organization.” Despite the differences between the two fields, Karen believes that her experience both as a mother and wife helped mold her into the leader that she wanted to be. She credits the culture of Shopee for allowing her to be that. “Being both a mother and a department head has shown me what it means to be a good leader. Much like motherhood, leadership, at its very core, is caring for one’s people.”

What is most rewarding for Karen is getting the admiration of the people whose opinion matters to her the most: her children. “Recently, I asked my eldest daughter what she wants to be when she grows up and she simply said, ‘I want to be like you.’ I am grateful to be doing meaningful work, and I hope my children strive to do the same someday.”

Primarose: Rising to the challenge at Shopee Express

Primarose: Rising to the challenge at Shopee Xpress
Primarose is a wife, a mother to three children, and a Shopee Xpress rider. Her unique journey with Shopee Xpress first began in June of 2021 after the pandemic forced her to close her souvenir store.

Being one of the few female riders in her line of profession, Primarose knows she has to be determined, and she has no regrets. She shared “Iba na ang panahon natin ngayon, hindi lang lalaki ang pwede magtrabaho. Nais ko ipakita sa mga ibang ina na kayang kaya rin nila makamit ang kanilang mga hangad.” (We live in a different age where women also have the opportunity to work. I want to show other mothers that they are capable of reaching their aspirations.)

She is now reaping the rewards of her efforts as she is now able to help provide for her family, and even take them out to eat in restaurants and go on outings. “Sa lahat ng nangyari mula sa pandemya, nagpapasalamat ako ng lubos na nagkaroon ako ng pagkakataon na magiging Shopee Xpress rider. Naging makahulugan ang pagiging ina at asawa ko dahil nabigay ko sa kanila ang pangangailangan nila mula sa trabaho ko bilang rider.” (Of all the things to have come out of this pandemic, I am most grateful that it gave me the opportunity to become a Shopee Xpress rider. I feel fulfilled as both a mother and wife knowing that I am able to provide for my family through my job.)

Mommy Gee: Finding balance as a working mother

Mommy Gee: Finding balance as a working mother
Prior to becoming a Shopee livestreamer, Glenda, also known as Mommy Gee, started her journey in creating online content by posting about what means most to her: her children. She is a single mom working multiple jobs to support her three children, and struggled with something most moms would know about: time management. Besides doing online content, Mommy Gee is also a licensed real estate agent and entrepreneur as she owns a Korean food franchise. When the pandemic struck, her real estate job experienced a hit which is why she chose to become a Shopee livestreamer. She shared, “As a single mother to three children, I felt the need to take on as much as I could to make up for the many lost opportunities I faced during the onslaught of the pandemic. ”

Mommy Gee chose to persevere doing livestream. At first, she wasn’t confident doing it but as time went by, she became more confident and eventually began to enjoy it. She loves helping people find their Shopee budols, and more importantly, connecting and making friends online. “As a single mother, I feel very blessed to have a job that allows me to spend more time with my children at home while also also giving me the opportunity to connect with a supportive online community.” shared Mommy Gee.

She encourages other working mothers to venture out of their comfort zones and persevere. Mommy Gee said “Starting out as a Shopee Livestreamer did not come easy for me, but I stuck with my decision and persevered. Seeing how much I have grown and learned since then is what pushes me to continue challenging myself.”

OH MY GULAY: Camille Prats’ kids love eating veggies?! Here’s how to make your kids love them too!

“I really used to struggle kasi hate na hate talaga ng kids ko dati ang veggies – ayaw nila yung taste. Taste is so important for kids, so I ensure na dapat na-eenjoy nila mga sineserve ko.”

Have you sat with your kids way past mealtime just to make sure they eat their veggies on the plate? How about resorting to bargaining more gadget time for just one more bite of that carrots? Well, you’re definitely not the only momma doing that. Even celebrities like Camille Prats have to do a bit of negotiating just to get her kids to eat their veggies.

Luckily, she shares some handy hacks with Spot.ph to do the trick without the crying, the bargaining, and the unnecessary drama that fills mealtime.

Here are 3 easy peasy ways to get your kids to eat their veggies according to Camille:

1. Oh My Gulay! May Gulay! – Instead of only serving your kids veggies, partner your kids’ meals with Tang Fruit & Veg. It comes in two flavors: Orange Carrot, which has the Vitamin C from oranges and Vitamin A from carrots, and Dalandan Malunggay, which has the Vitamin C from dalandan and the Iron of malunggay. Tang Fruit & Veg has the delicious taste of fruits AND the nutrition from veggies in a drink that kids love! Camille can vouch this – her kids love its taste so much, they actually ask her for it themselves! Yummy na, masustansya pa!

2. SmartMom Recipes - No need to work hard, just work smart! Incorporate veggies in delectable recipes that you know your kids will surely love. Your kids won’t notice that veggies are actually the main ingredient because of its delicious taste!

3. Appearance is key – Kids are very visual so it’s really all about making their plate look fun! Focus on making veggies look appetizing by using creative shapes and brightly colored bowls to increase their appetite. You can even add in their favorite animal or cartoon character for that extra wow factor! You can go as simple as making trees out of broccoli or more complex as making pirates from cucumbers-- the idea stays the same: make it fun!

Davao City embraces cashless transformation with GCash

Aside from being the largest city in the world, Davao City now holds the distinction of having a fast-growing digital ecosystem, thanks to GCash, the leading mobile wallet in the country.

To help ensure safe and cashless transactions in Davao City, more and more private and public sector entities are accepting payments via GCash. For instance, all the three utility companies in the city namely, the Davao City Water District, Davao Light and BP Waterworks now accept payments from consumers via Pay Bills in the GCash app. Top retail establishments like the Gaisano Mall, NCCC Group, Felcris Group, Davao City Hardware, Amesco Drugstores, and Trust Hardware also offer GCash as a payment method for their consumers.

All over the city, residents have embraced the use of GCash for everyday purchases. There are currently 1,547 formal merchants that accept payments via QR codes, more than 500 cash-in stations and a total of 3,010 informal sellers accepting payments via GCash in Davao City.  In addition, 793 public market vendors and 644 tricycle drivers in the city are also accepting payments via GCash. With these numbers, both the entrepreneurs and consumers in Davao City have access to safe and convenient payment methods.

According to Martha Sazon, president and CEO of GCash, innovative thinking and a strong commitment to the communities of GCash partners are keys to achieving financial inclusivity in communities like Davao City. “At the heart of everything we do at GCash is our purpose to make Filipinos' everyday lives better,” she added.

To recognize the efforts of government agencies and enterprises for embracing digital financial solutions for the benefit of their constituents and customers, GCash held the GCash Digital Excellence Awards. During the first run for Public Sector achievers in December 2021, the Davao City Water District received  the “Excellence in Digital Ecosystem Innovation Award.”

“With the help of GCash, the Davao City Water District has made water bill payments safe and convenient for our customers. This also supported the city’s campaign for residents to stay at home and stay safe. We look forward to more years of partnership with GCash as we continue to improve our services in Davao City,” said Eduardo Bangayan, Chairman of Davao City Water District.

In April 2022,  GCash bestowed the “Industry Pioneer” award to the NCCC Group of Companies during the awards night for enterprise and MSME partners.

“We continue to create innovative ways to provide our customers with a safe and convenient shopping experience. Through our partnership with GCash which started in 2017, we were able to embrace the digital transformation phase to serve patrons from Davao City, Davao del Norte and eventually in Puerto Princesa, Palawan,” said Lafayette Lim, CEO of NCCC Group of Companies.

Aside from Davaoeños being able to pay their fees on utilities like water through the pay bills feature, they can also maximize other services such as send money, buy load and bank transfer. GCash also offers its users easy access flexible payment options via credit line with GCredit, shop now pay later with GGives, COVID-19 health insurance for as low as P39 a month via GInsure, a savings account with GSave, investment starting at only P50 in a market fund with GInvest, and a one stop online shop for essentials, food and more on GLife.

By establishing partnerships with the public and private sectors in Davao City, GCash is enabling Davaoeños to have access to safe and secure digital financial services as part of its vision of financial inclusion for all.

The Klimathon grand finals ceremony was held virtually on April 22, 2022 with the top ten finalists presenting their project concepts to the judges chaired by Dr. Maria Angela Zafra of the National Panel of Technical Experts of CCC, with members Ms. Adona Princesa San Diego of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR); Ms. Laarni Piloton of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST); Ms. Antoinette Taus, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador and founder of CORA Philippines; and Ms. Jasmine Estacio, Innovation Portfolio Management Head of Nestlé Philippines.

The proposals were judged based on their relevance to climate action, innovativeness, community impact, and sustainability.

Klimathon Champions

Team Econique from the Ateneo De Naga University bagged the third place for their entry, “PH Green Energy Harvesting Using Modified Triboelectric Nanogenerator (M-TENG),” while Team Genoplas from The Mabini Academy placed second for their proposal, “GENOPLAS: A Revolutionary Sustainable Multifunctional Bioplastics from Upcycled Fish Waste Components.”

Team Neutralizer from the University of Mindanao emerged as the first-ever Klimathon Champions with their project concept, “Synthesis of Engineered Bamboo Nanocomposite Through Sol-Gel Technique: A Breakthrough in Automated Vertical Farming using Hydroponics in the Philippines.

“We are really honored to become the first-ever Klimathon Champions. All our hard work over the past six months to hone and improve our proposal has been worth it. We would like to thank CCC and Nestlé Philippines for believing in what the youth can do for the environment; for giving us the opportunity to showcase our ideas and learn first-hand from industry experts through the mentorship program,” said Jeremiah Malalis and Larry Competente from Team Neutralizer

The top three winning teams received cash prizes that they can use as seed money to further develop and/or implement their project concepts. Special awards were also given to teams that developed embodying and promoting gender empowerment, originality, and community participation:

  • Team Genoplas - Gender Empowerment
  • Team Econique - Originality
  • Team Tagubtub - Community Participation

“As we commemorate Earth Day, let us continue to invest more in our youth, in our communities, and in our creativity and intellect as a nation towards sustainability and resiliency. This is the only way to go in order for us to secure a better future for our nation,” said Secretary Robert E.A. Borje, Vice-Chairperson and Executive Director of CCC.

Youth as inheritors of the planet

During the program, House Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda expressed her support for the Filipino youth and what they are doing for the environment through a special message.

“It is encouraging to see young people already very heavily involved in climate action, all the more because you are doing this in the face of immense challenges and uncertainties because of the pandemic. You are an inspiration to us all,” Deputy Speaker Legarda said. “The next few years ahead will be critical in securing a livable future for humanity. To do so, we will need to stimulate and scale up innovation. The youth of the world are going to be key partners in this endeavor.”

The youth participants committed to use their capabilities toward net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the Klimathon Pledge led by Ms. Antoinette Taus.

In his closing remarks, Nestlé Philippines Chairman and CEO Kais Marzouki emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Klimathon in keeping with the inclusive approach of empowering the youth and consumers to take action.

“Through Klimathon, we are privileged to be able to work with the youth in particular, providing a platform for developing science-based solutions to climate change,” he said. “To our youth participants, you are among the most passionate and creative members of society, and you can make a difference. It is for you to apply the knowledge and insights that you have gained, to be the changemakers that the world needs today.”

In order to achieve its goal of net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, Nestlé Philippines continues to engage in partnerships with like-minded stakeholders and work with different sectors in the country.
