Gov't must accelerate vaccine rollout to jumpstart economic recovery - BDO

Gov't must accelerate vaccine rollout to jumpstart economic recovery - BDO

As government mulls extending the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the so-called NCR Plus bubble until April 18 to slow down the spread of COVID-19, the rollout of vaccines must also be accelerated to help jumpstart a laggard economy.

According to BDO Unibank chief investment officer Frederico Rafael "Fritz" D. Ocampo, it is imperative that these two things be implemented for things to get back to normal.

"The pandemic is a public health issue, and so everybody wants to reopen the economy. Everybody wants to get back to normal. But the main issue is controlling the COVID spread and accelerating the vaccine rollout. Unless we're able to do these two top of mind and priority issues, then all of our dreams of getting back to normal will remain just a dream," he said in an interview with CNN Philippines. "What we have learned during the past year is when you have prolonged mobility restrictions, especially when you have a total lockdown of the economy, it just creates a lot of unemployed people and we tend to worsen the problem."

Ocampo also lamented the unenviable task facing the government right now amid the continuous surge of COVID-19 cases.

"It's a major challenge. The balancing act that you have to do right now is saving lives against saving jobs or saving the economy," he added. "We have to contain COVID and we have to accelerate the delivery of vaccines and start rolling them out in a more aggressive way. The sooner we do that, then the better it will be for our recovery, our reopening of the Philippine economy."

According to OCTA Research, the number of COVID-19 cases is expected to continue to surge for the next couple of weeks despite the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases' decision to place NCR Plus (Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal) under a general community quarantine bubble from March 22 to April 4.

Under the ECQ bubble, travel to and from Metro Manila and the four adjacent provinces is not allowed unless deemed as essential. These areas were also placed under a 10PM-5AM curfew. With these restrictions, the government hopes this will result to lesser increase in COVID-19 cases.

On March 29, the Philippines recorded 10,016 more COVID-19 cases, bringing the total count of newly-confirmed infections to 731,894, of which 115,495 are active cases.

To help jumpstart the economy, Ocampo opined the recovery of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) must likewise be one of the priorities.

"The proposed ARISE (Accelerated Recovery and Investments Stimulus for the Economy of the Philippines) bill is still in the backburner. The longer we prolong the pain of the MSMEs, the more people will lose their jobs. The scarring could be permanent," he said.

The ARISE Bill, passed by the House of Representatives in third and final reading last year seeks to extend support to micro, small, and medium enterprises and other sectors affected by the pandemic.

We cannot talk yet of how they (MSMEs) are rebuilding because they're still in pain. More and more companies have declared downsizing this late in the game. They need assistance and they need it now. If we assist them, they they'll hire their old workers back again. And these workers will consume, and that's what we need. We are a service-driven economy," Ocampo added.

5 Tips to Help You Successfully Grow Your Online Business

5 Tips to Help You Successfully Grow Your Online Business

In this day and age where digital is king, businesses are not limited to just brick-and-mortar stores anymore. The internet has paved the way for entrepreneurs to showcase their products online, extending their reach to an even wider market.

The popularity of online businesses has increased during the lockdown period where most people are stuck at home and physical stores for non-essential businesses have to close temporarily (and some, for good). According to Zalora Philippines CEO Paolo Campos, 91% of Filipino internet users searched for goods and services to purchase and out of this, 76% completed the transaction. A Global Web Index survey also showed that 48% of Filipinos look forward to doing more online shopping even after the pandemic is over.

So, for those who are planning to dip their toes into an online venture as well as business owners who want to expand their services to keep up with the new normal, now is the most ideal time to take that leap.

Choose your platform

Grow your online business successfully by identifying first the platform that best fits the product or service that you offer as well as your branding, personal preference, and budget. You can choose from as simple as social media sites like Instagram and Facebook to websites and marketplace e-commerce platforms such as Lazada and Shopee.

Be visible

Making your business visible to your target market is another important thing to consider. With so many brands and names in the market today, you want to be able to stand out and attract more customers. You can do this by producing high-quality content, may it be in the form of write-ups, infographics, or videos for your page or website that will not only inform but more importantly, engage your audience. Depending on your spending capability, you can also consider investing in SEO.

Another way to add to your online presence is by taking advantage of the reach and power of social media and setting up a business page or account on popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Lastly, always provide your business’ contact information on your platforms and make sure that you answer inquiries and resolve complaints from your customers as soon as possible. Nothing beats great customer experience, after all.

Know your customer

To deliver good service, you need to know and understand the needs and preferences of your customers. What are their preferred paying methods? Is your website user-friendly? Do they prefer chatbots or customer self-service for inquiries?

Keeping them in mind every step of the way will allow you to build something that serves them, not you. This will help you create a strong relationship with your customers and in turn, the possibility of new sales through recommendations and positive reviews.

Study and learn from competition

This is a great strategy to gauge the market you’re in ― to know what works and what doesn’t. By knowing your competitors, you’ll be able to come up with strategies to make your brand stand out from the rest, identify your flaws, and improve your own business performance.

The internet has made this process easy. You can easily do this by checking their social media pages or websites, reading customer reviews, and taking note of the key elements on their pages. For a more in-depth look, you may opt to use online tools to analyze their strategies.

Widen your business knowledge

Nowadays, entrepreneurs can come from all backgrounds and walks of life, and they are not anymore limited to just business graduates and the like. After all, knowledge can be attained in so many ways. As you go along the process of building your business, learning will always follow.

Being knowledgeable on the current trends in the industry as well as the fundamentals in retail and online marketing, data science, consumer psychology, financial management, and related topics can go a long way in the success of your venture.

One of the pioneer schools where you can learn these competencies is at STI College where they offer bachelors degree in Retail Technology and Consumer Science, Business Management, and an associate course in Retail Technology to hone graduates in the evolving business industry.

These innovative and comprehensive programs will equip future entrepreneurs with specialized skills in the areas of Retail Marketing, Consumer Psychology, Information Technology, and Data Science.

Not new to innovations in education, STI has been at the forefront of developing courses and programs that are industry and trend adept to give its students the needed knowledge and skills to succeed in the real world. It has also established partnerships with key industry players worldwide for its programs and trainings in the country.

in the power of Japanese Persimmon

Modern ageing with grace-empowered Kaki persimmon soap

Numbers that indicate progress in a person’s lives can sometimes be daunting especially for women. In fact, age is often left off the table during conversations, but what if it doesn’t have to be? Fortunately, a new soap that empowers ladies to age gracefully is emerging in the Philippines.

Nonenal among ageing people is often caused by hormonal imbalance but with a pure soap that cleanses the body, smell might as well be a non-issue. This is what KAKI promises as a consumer brand.

KAKI is a new persimmon-based soap that indulges the body into a regenerated state, away from unwanted odors, discoloration, and firmness of skin.

Gina, 42, a bachelorette shares what she noticed after a month of continued use of the soap.

“I no longer feel insecure because KAKI takes care of my body. I used to be so conscious of how I smell because I easily sweat. Now because of Kaki, I feel very confident even after a long day in the sun or even working out.”

The same sentiment is also observed even in more mature ladies. Retired teacher, Angela, 56, says: “My skin feels very light and plump, and it reminds me of my younger days. My children and even my apos are not taken aback by my smell and they love bonding with me. This means a lot to me now that I can focus on my own grandchildren after teaching in school for decades.”

Philippine universities get ready to face off at first-ever virtual EU Whiz: Filipino Youth of the FEUture

EU Whiz: Filipino Youth of the FEUture

Philippine universities get ready to face off at first-ever virtual EU Whiz: Filipino Youth of the FEUture

Colleges and universities across the Philippines are set to gear up for the much-anticipated EU Whiz: Filipino Youth of the FEUture—an annual inter-collegiate competition spearheaded by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines

Since 2006, the EU Whiz has been a fun and exciting way for Filipino students to showcase their knowledge and understanding of the EU and EU-Philippine relations.

“The EU and the Philippines have enjoyed a strong and mutually beneficial partnership for many years now,” said EU Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Véron. “The EU Whiz is a fun and exciting way for a new generation of Filipino youth to rediscover the ties and common history that bind our people together. It also introduces them to the EU, its institutions and our partnership with the Philippines.”

Apart from the quiz, the EU Whiz: Filipino Youth of the FEUture has been expanded to include two more events—the “My Space, My Rights” video competition, and the “Green ECO I See” digital art competition. This year also marks the first time that all events will be held online as a result of the pandemic.

“The EU has always been passionate about celebrating the inherent talent and creativity of young Filipinos,” said Ambassador Véron. “Given the current restrictions, we have decided to bring the competition to the virtual stage in the hopes of engaging even more students and universities across the country.”

All three competitions are open to bonafide Filipino students currently enrolled in Philippine universities for Academic Year 2021. Interested students must form a group of three members to participate. Cool gadgets and exclusive EU Whiz items await the winning teams.

Online submission of applications will run from March 17 to May 1, 2021. The competition will culminate in a virtual awarding ceremony to be livestreamed on the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines Facebook page on June 26, 2021. Full mechanics and details for all three competitions are available at https://eeas.europa.eu/philippines or https://euwhizfyf2021.engage.eu/. Competition updates will also be posted on the official social media pages of the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines (Facebook: @EUDelegationToThePhilippines, Twitter: @EUinthePH, and Instagram: @euinthephilippines).

As part of the activities, the general public will also be enjoined to participate in The MorEU Know—a weekly social media trivia on general EU facts.

Starting April 2021, a Question of the Week will be posted on the official Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines Facebook page. Audiences can comment on the posts with the correct responses for a chance to win cool gadgets and accessories courtesy of the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines.

#IntelligentPR gets Comm&Sense nominated for Agency of the Year at Ph Quills

#IntelligentPR gets Comm&Sense nominated for Agency of the Year at Ph Quills

Comm&Sense’s big bet on data-driven communications - or simply, “Intelligent PR” - appears to be a step in the right direction as the agency was nominated for the Agency of the Year award for the second time in a row on the back of its record haul of 15 Philippine Quill Awards from the International Association of Business Communicators - Philippines.

Leading the 15 recognitions is the collaboration between Comm&Sense and leading health maintenance organization (HMO) PhilCare which produced the PhilCare Community Quarantine (CQ) Wellness Index, a study on the state of well-being of Filipinos as they faced the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rolled out in the summer of 2020, the PhilCare CQ Wellness Index looked into the actual state of well-being of Filipinos while in quarantine. The study also examined how various sectors of society across the country responded to the effects of the lockdowns and the pandemic as a whole.

The PhilCare CQ Wellness Index received two top division award nominations: One for Excellence in Communications Research and the other for COVID Communications, a special division in this year’s Quills dedicated to business communication efforts in response to the pandemic.

Apart from these, Comm&Sense and its affiliates received awards for its collaborations with clients in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, financial services, and healthcare services.

A full-service digital PR agency established in 2005, Comm&Sense has since then always believed and practiced #IntelligentPR, which is rooted in data, whether from clients or from research. Data and actionable insights are crucial in each communication plan the agency makes for campaigns to have impact on their respective target audiences.

The data-driven content is then followed by creative execution and smart amplification. Together, the three elements are what clients need to build credibility with their respective customers.

The relevant insights gathered by PhilCare CQ Wellness Index were then amplified through both traditional and online media and would serve as a springboard for the HMO to come up with the appropriate action given the continuing pandemic.

Jaeger L. Tanco
Founder and President, Comm&Sense

“This win at the Quill Awards just goes to show that our brand of #IntelligentPR just makes sense. For the last 15 years, we at Comm&Sense have made sure that each campaign and communication plan we come up with answers clients’ communication needs and responds well to the needs of their respective audiences. We are truly honored to have pushed the bounds of PR with this feat,” said Comm&Sense founder and president Jaeger L. Tanco.

He added that the agency was honored to be part of the successes of its clients and thankful that they were able to help especially during the pandemic.

Comm&Sense Director Eusebio H. Tanco, for his part, said that the agency’s awards were a validation of its move towards data-driven communications.

“Through data, we were able to understand the public more. People want hard proof, especially when making important decisions, whether they be personal or for business. We were able to communicate with them the way they wanted even before this new normal. It has definitely helped Comm&Sense create successful campaigns and we’re proud of that,” EHT said.

Celebrating the #WomenOfLRT1

Celebrating the #WomenOfLRT1

Every year around the world, March 8 is celebrated as the International Women’s Day serving as a tribute, a platform, and a call for concrete, sustainable, and inclusive actions towards gender equality. At the height of the global pandemic, many women frontliners bravely took on the challenge of playing important roles in helping the country navigate through the new normal. Displaying resilience amidst unsettling conditions and determination to continue providing quality service despite tougher struggles, women have continuously shown power to lead and thrive even in a difficult situation.

Within the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), many female team members have proven their strength to overcome personal challenges and continue to excel in a rather male-dominated industry. In support of Philippine Commission on Women (PCW)’s #WomenMakeChange theme for 2021 National Women’s Month Celebration, here are some stories about the #WomenOfLRT1 to inspire and empower more women to be agents of change.

Lou Ambrosio, Lead Station Supervisor

Having spent nearly 15 years in the rail industry and working for LRT-1, Lou has the task of properly leading the team that directly interacts with customers, including station supervisors, tellers, and other personnel directly performing their functions within the station. With the goal of delivering a reliable and quality customer service to the riding public, the weight on her shoulders is pretty daunting.

As a front-liner, the pandemic has been challenging for Lou. “Isolation, contact restrictions, and economic shutdown completely changed us. For me, the first challenge I had was ensuring the safety of my family back home (in the province), the basic needs of my family, the thought of not seeing them due to travel restrictions, and the probability of getting and being sick due to the lack of responsiveness and carelessness of others. Second, the fear of losing my job due to the economic crisis. Lastly, the challenge to implement protocol and measures in the performance of my job and the thought of how to go about the situation confronted and tested my personality. This pandemic is a totally different experience and routine for me,” she says.

But like a true leader honed by years of experience, she managed to allay her worries and fears. “Being the kind of person who always looked on the brighter side of every situation, facing these times with self-care and care for others, and keeping my strong faith in God are some of my best weapons in overcoming these adversities.”

Christine Cunanan, Train Operator

It’s not every day we get to see a woman train operator, but Christine has bravely stepped up to the challenge amidst the risks and responsibilities entailed by the job. Working in a male-dominated industry, the pressure of being a woman train operator will always be there. But with the ongoing pandemic, the anxiety just doubles with the added risk of contracting the virus due to potential exposure.

But Christine is lucky to be working with her LRMC family. “I am very thankful to the company for providing and ensuring the health and safety of employees in our workplace,” she says. Christine also adds the extra measures she takes to make sure that she is able to accomplish her job well and ensure her safety. “Drivers must be cautious and must know the basic health safety protocol in this pandemic like proper wearing of face mask, face shield, proper disinfection, and keeping a safe distance,” Christine says.

Florence Bautista, Head of Human Resource and Admin

As the primary caretaker of LRMC’s employees, Florence has to look after the well-being and concerns of team members. “Although stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns have always been there, this pandemic brought the employee’s mental health to the forefront,” Florence says. As a general solution, she ensured that communication lines between management and employees—from top to bottom—remain open at all costs. “As a leader, I can never overemphasize the need to consistently reach out and communicate to our employees,” she says, marking the importance of communication, albeit virtual, at a time of physical distancing.

As the concurrent head of human resources and administration, there is obviously much on Florence’s plate as it is. But when the pandemic happened, the challenge became even tougher. “None of us had imagined that something like this would come, the sudden shift in work culture has brought a lot of challenges for HR,” says Florence. This includes their abrupt transition to working remotely/out of office work, which has somehow slowed down their operations as a company. But teamwork, as one of LRMC’s core values, grew stronger and allowed LRMC to continue performing the work that had to be done despite the challenging times. In some ways the pandemic made the team stronger with team leaders increasing the check-in with their team. The human element in any crisis cannot be ignored, and LRMC’s HR team made sure to support team leaders in addressing concerns.

Melca Samson, Head of Buildings and Facilities Section & Infrastructure Division Manager

As the concurrent head of LRMC’s Buildings and Facilities Section, and manager of the Infrastructure Division, Melca plays a massive role handling the overall management of tracks, buildings, and facilities and ensures all project and construction works are done on time. Like Lou, Melca’s main struggle during the pandemic was balancing responsibilities between work and home. “This pandemic has not been easy for everyone, indeed painful and worrying for me at times. There’s a lot of changes in my plans, I cry sometimes when overwhelmed with a difficult situation. But I need to be strong and adapt to the new changes and face the responsibilities,” she said.

Despite her predicament, Melca has managed to keep herself on track. “I stop, set and list down my priorities, slow down and focus on the important things first. I’ve also learned to love myself and find a simple source of joy through gardening and planting.” Thanks to a new hobby, she was able to keep these worries off her mind and focus on her tasks at hand. “Seeing my plants growing can put a smile on my face and can be a happy conversation topic with my away husband and children. Watching funny videos on YouTube and Netflix movies with my youngest son is also another reason for me to laugh and have quality time with him.” Through it all, she has also kept her faith and determination to become even better both at home and at work.

Jireh Canoy, Head of Maintenance Planning Section

Working with a more optimized team of engineers and the unavoidable work-from-home scheme during the pandemic, Jireh found it challenging to juggle work and family responsibilities. “As a working mom, I have also been worried about my health and also for my family,” Jireh adds.

Despite the new challenges, Jireh has managed to harness strength from all her past experiences. “I overcome all my struggles with my faith in God,” she says. Jireh also focused on having a more positive outlook in dealing with her problems both at work and at home. “Second, I found my passion. I really enjoy the current job I have now despite all the challenges I faced during the pandemic.”

These few remarkable stories of women from within the LRMC prove that when women are given the right opportunities, they can thrive and excel in so many ways. Along with a good combination of their faith and resourcefulness, these inspiring women prove that even in a man’s world, there is nothing that a strong, resilient, and reliable woman cannot do.
