5 eco-friendly cooking tips by Solane

5 eco-friendly cooking tips

Make your time in the kitchen more environmentally friendly with Solane

For many, life in quarantine has been an endless repetitive routine of cooking and cleaning. Since the kitchen consumes a lot of energy and food is a major contributor to carbon footprint, a lot of people have become more conscious about conserving food, energy, and other resources. Truly, a change in mindset and lifestyle can have a significant impact on the environment.

5 eco-friendly cooking tips

So, if you want to take your efforts up a notch and make your time in the kitchen more environmentally friendly, Solane, a leading LPG in the country, offers five simple tips for you to try.

Get sustainable cookware.

One way to be environmentally responsible in the kitchen is to get rid of plastic cooking tools. It is best to have wooden spoons and spatulas instead. Not only are they sustainable and can prevent scratch marks on your pans, they also don’t melt, unlike plastic utensils. Also, non-stick Teflon pans may be the convenient choice for cookware, but they can be easily damaged and are known for releasing toxic chemicals. Try switching to heavy duty and long-lasting alternatives like cast-iron pans or ceramic Dutch ovens.

Save water.

Water conservation has been a long-standing environmental concern. One way you can help with this problem in the kitchen is by investing in a low-flow faucet. When cooking, you can also rinse your produce in a container, instead of washing them under running water. Once you are done, that “rinse water” can be reused to water plants outdoors. Another tip: Defrost frozen food in the fridge in advance since defrosting under running water can be wasteful. Lastly, try steaming vegetables rather than boiling them because it uses less water and is generally healthier too.

Segregate waste.

When you are cooking, a lot of trash is disposed of from food scraps to plastic packaging. Make sure you have multiple trash bins in your kitchen to separate biodegradable wastes from non-biodegradable trash. Do a quick search on the internet on which items falls into which category and print out signs to be placed by the garbage cans so you, your family, and household staff can easily familiarize yourselves with proper disposal. This practice also helps with the reduction of waste in landfills.

Support local produce.

Buying products from local businesses and farmers helps both the environment and the economy. Supporting local also contributes to the conservation of fuel and energy since local products do not have to be transported long distances. Also, many of these items are grown organically which is healthier for your body, a must amid the pandemic.

Use a trusted LPG brand.

Liquefied petroleum gas is better for the environment than other fuels as it is known to release less carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. With this, it is best to choose a brand that has been used and trusted by many households in the country, like Solane, which also provides a cleaner, healthier, and safer fuel that will make every meal better for you, your family, and Mother Nature.

Visiting a doctor amid pandemic: If symptoms persist, don’t hesitate

Visiting a doctor amid pandemic: If symptoms persist, don’t hesitate
The widespread panic and fear generated by COVID-19 have brought the world to a grinding halt with authorities imposing quarantine protocols.

Visiting a doctor amid pandemic: If symptoms persist, don’t hesitate

The pandemic has caused many Filipinos to hesitate to visit doctors’ clinics primarily due to the fear of contracting the virus outside their homes. Medical practitioners are now conducting teleconsultations or virtual consultations, allowing patients to have access to doctors through phone or video calls to mitigate the situation.

Some hospitals have already opened outpatient clinics but on an appointment basis only, with the patients required to accomplish health declaration forms.

While the spread of COVID-19 currently dominates health concerns, Filipinos should not ignore their pre-existing health conditions or non-COVID-19 symptoms, as this can put patients at enormous health risk. Among health conditions that must be paid close attention to are diabetes and hypertension.

Studies have shown an increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension with nearly four million cases of diabetes recorded in the Philippines as of May 2020 , while hypertension is the leading preventable cause of premature death worldwide.   The emergence of COVID-19 leaves these patients vulnerable to the virus.

“When seeing a doctor, the risks and benefits must be considered. Whatever circumstances we’re in, it doesn’t change the fact that when symptoms persist, people shouldn’t hesitate to consult a doctor, be it on-site or through virtual consultations,” said Dr. Alex Junia, Cardiologist at the Perpetual Succour Hospital and Past President of the Philippine Heart Association.

“Early medical intervention saves lives,” the doctor emphasized.

Among the early warning signs of diabetes emergencies that should not be ignored are extreme thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination, unplanned weight loss, hunger, fatigue, irritable behavior, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, skin that itches, or is dry and/or yeast infections.

However, not all symptoms of diabetes are the same. According to  Dr. Grace De los Santos, Diabetologist at the Metropolitan Medical Center and President of  Diabetes Philippines, “Type 1 diabetes symptoms may also include abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, while Type 2 diabetes symptoms may include shortness of breath, pain or numbness in the extremities.”

Likewise, the symptoms of hypertension must also be discussed with doctors for proper medical attention. While people with high blood pressure often have unnoticeable symptoms, there are instances when the blood pressure is alarmingly elevated that the patient may experience the following: headache, dizziness, and blurred vision.

Some of the symptoms may resemble other medical conditions, so it is best to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis.

“There is a variety of treatment and management options for patients with diabetes and hypertension. The decision on which medications to opt for to achieve target blood sugar levels and to lower the blood pressure depends on many factors including patient’s medical history and other health problems a patient may have. This is why it is crucial to seek and consult a doctor to discuss the best treatment plan for one’s condition,” Dr. Greta Cortez, Boehringer Ingelheim Philippines Inc.  Head of Medicine, Human Pharma, explained.

To alleviate concerns about visiting the doctor for consultation, patients are advised to take safety precautions such as having temperatures checked, wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and making a habit of bringing alcohol for sanitation and disinfection.

Diwatang Maria addresses Pinoy’s 5 major skin problems

The majority of Asians experience five major skin problems due to their adaptation to their climate and the pigment composition of their skin, surveys have shown. Because of this, Asians need different skincare regimens.

Diwatang Maria addresses Pinoy’s 5 major skin problems

Diwatang Maria addresses Pinoy’s 5 major skin problems

And among Asians, Filipinos, both men and women suffer from these five common skin conditions; however, most of the soaps marketed in the country are for skin lightening while discounting the real skin concerns of the consumers.

Diwatng Maria, the newest beauty bar soap in the country today features three soap variants that address Pinoy skin concerns while boasting of its premium quality ingredients.

Aside from the fact that Diwatang Maria soaps are organic, the three variants

1. Diwatang Maria Makiling
2. Diwatang Maria Sinukuan
3. Diwatang Maria Cacao

It contains combinations of premium-grade organic ingredients that are best for several skin problems.

Ma. Concepcion Macalintal, President and CEO of Diwatang Maria said that before she decided to finally take this journey of manufacturing and distributing beauty soaps she noticed that most of the soaps available in the country are mostly for lightening. “The shelves in the supermarkets and grocery stores are already full of different skin lightening soap and this is the reason we made Diwatang Maria, not just for skin lightening but to really address what Filipino skin needs.”

According to Macalintal the five most common skin conditions among Pinoys are sensitivity or prone to pimples and acne, dark spots, oiliness, dry skin that lacks radiance, and hyperpigmentation

“These are the skin problems that Diwatang Maria would like to answer so we combined premium quality organic ingredients that will not only lighten the skin but treats several skin issues,” Macalintal noted.

Macalaintal also added that they are using virgin coconut oil as the soap base of Diwatang Maria, and by doing this, consumers, can enjoy the benefits of VCO. “I personally make sure that each variant contains enough of the primary ingredients to ensure that our consumers will enjoy the results that we promise.”

Diwatang Maria Makiling for pimples, dark spots and hyperpigmentation
Combining the power of kojic acid, papaya enzyme and aloe vera guarantee impressive results in just a couple of weeks. Koji Acid and papaya enzymes are known effective skin lightening agents and they also help in controlling the oiliness of the skin, thus, treat pimples and acne. Kojic acid is also known for improving the appearance of melasma and hyperpigmentation.

Those who have tried other soaps with kojic acid usually complain about itchiness. To address this concern Macalintal shared that by adding aloe vera in the ingredients of Diwatang Maria Makiling it helps soothe or prevent itching of the skin. “Our customers who have tried Diwatang Maria Makiling can attest to its efficacy in lightening the skin and the soothing effect of aloe vera.”

Diwatang Maria also has its signature scent derived from orange’s essential oil.
Diwata Maria Sinukuan - Gluta Kojic Soap

Diwatang Maria Sinukuan for sensitive skin that lacks radiance
This variant is gaining popularity not only for its benefits on the skin but for its lavander scent, which has calming effect.

Enriched with glutathione, kojic acid and papaya enzyme, Diwatang Maria Sinukuan will surely make your skin glow and best for sensitive skin because it contains glutathione, which is a known a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent inflammation.

Infused with oatmeal kernel, Diwatang Maria Sinukuan also helps in removing excess oil and dead skin cells, thus, leaving the skin radiant and glowing. Because of the anti-inflammatory properties of oatmeal and glutathione this soap variant is best for people whose skin reacts easily to dirt, dust, bacteria, and chemicals.
Diwatang Maria Cacao for dry, dull skin

Diwatang Maria Cacao for dry, dull skin
Not all people want to have fairer skin, there are many Pinoys and Pinays who embrace their morena complexion, and this is the reason Macalintal designed Diwatang Maria Cacao variant.
This chocolate-scented soap will give your skin the moisture and radiance it needs with the skin enhancing and anti-aging benefits from oatmeal kernel, colloidal oatmeal, and shea butter. These ingredients help our skin to maintain and stimulate collagen production. Together with aloe vera, Diwatang Maria Cacao can help the skin restores elasticity while fighting inflammation and free radicals with every bath.

According to Macalintal all Diwatang Maria products are paraben-free, and free of other harmful ingredients. “Our soaps are 100 organic and very safe on the skin as they contain no chemical, everything that we used to form every soap is from natural ingredients and of premium quality.”

According to the 8th National Nutrition Survey by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), 3 out of 10 Filipino Children (5 and below) are stunted. Stunting or “pagkabansot” in our native tongue is a manifestation of long term occurrence of malnutrition. It is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) “as impaired growth and development that children experience from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation”.

How Stunting is Stunted
Growth failure can start from the womb and progress after birth. The effects of stunting, if not immediately and properly addressed, can be permanent and irreversible. There is a window of opportunity to reverse or prevent stunting through effective interventions for children 5 years old and below. Unfortunately, there is no cure to stunting, so prevention is critical for young children to have healthy growth and development.

It is imperative for parents to track their child’s growth. The National Nutrition Council provided a simplified and more understandable Child Growth Standard Table based on WHO’s Child Growth Standards (WHO-CGS) 2004 and WHO’s Reference Data, 2006. Importance of Proper Nutrition to avoid Stunting

Women of child-bearing age and expectant mothers must have adequate nutrition to prepare their bodies to a healthy pregnancy and give birth to a well-nourished baby. It is also highly important that breastfeeding mothers get adequate nutrition in order to supply the needs of their babies throughout the 6 months exclusive breastfeeding journey. Exclusive breastfeeding from 0-6 months is recommended for babies to gain optimum nutrients perfect for their age. To prevent your child from having growth failure, it is important to address poor diet, inadequate calorie intake, poor quality of meal intake, and insufficient supply of macro nutrients like protein and micro nutrients like calcium specific for growth and development.
