Healthy Diet safeguards against COVID-19

The COVID-19 Pandemic intensifies the Philippine’s battle against Double Burden of Malnutrition. Double Burden of Malnutrition is defined by World Health Organization (WHO) as “the coexistence of undernutrition along with overweight and obesity, or diet-related non communicable diseases, within individuals, households and populations, and across the life course.”

The limited distribution and access to food supplies aggravate the plight of poor and low income Filipino households to sustain each person’s required nutrients through healthy meals. On the other hand, home confinement due to the mandated community quarantine may cause more people to not only restrict their physical activities but also to overeat and/or consume more food with empty calories as part of coping with stress and/or boredom.

Given the importance of maintaining healthy diets to sustain our health and immunity against viruses and bacteria, we should turn to the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® as a viable safeguard to protect our family from diseases.

Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) introduced “Mag-Pinggang Pinoy® Tayo 7-day Menu Challenge” as a way to encourage homemakers to serve variety of balanced meals to their families. Homemakers could access the Mag-Pinggang Pinoy® Tayo 7-day menu plan at www.ajinomoto.com.ph and facebook.com/CookmunitybyAjinomotoPH. This is part of the company’s “Eat Well, Live Well. Stay Well.” campaign to provide Filipino families with practical tips on proper nutrition, recipe menu and fitness activities to cope, stay well and enjoy life despite current COVID-19 situation.

Ajinomoto’s 7-day menu plan is composed of complete meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each meal provides recipe suggestions for Healthy & Delicious Pinggang Pinoy® Recipes that are easy-to-do and affordable. These recipes are simple, solutions to serve enjoyable Pinggang Pinoy® meals.  Homemakers could make use of their extra time to purchase widely available and inexpensive vegetables and fruits to complement rice beyond the usual supply of canned goods. Ajinomoto’s recipes make common ingredients more palatable like tofu sisig, meaty pechay picadillo, pork tapa and tomatoes, ensaladang talbos ng kamote, sweet and sour galunggong and many more. Here are three (3) recipe samplers done in three (3) easy steps:

Meaty Pechay Picadillo: 1) SAUTÉ onion, garlic and ground pork and mix in carrots, green peas and pechay. 2) SEASON with pepper, soy sauce and AJI-GINISA® Flavor Seasoning Mix. 3) COOK for 1 minute more.

Tofu Sisig: 1) FRY tofu until golden brown and set aside. 2) SAUTÉ ginger, onion and garlic, add fried tofu and liver spread and mix well. 3) SEASON with sugar and PORKSAVOR® All-in-One Seasoning mix and add chili peppers.

Pork tapa with tomatoes: 1) MARINATE pork in water, sugar, soy sauce, pepper and SARSAYA® Oyster Sauce for an hour or overnight. 2) SAUTÉ onion, garlic and pork. 3) BOIL. Pour the marinate mixture and boil until mixture is thick.

Mental wellness tips amid crises

How you react to difficult situations can make a big difference on your well-being.

Mental wellness tips amid crises

The pandemic has undoubtedly taken a toll on our mental health. While difficult circumstances such as these are often beyond our control, how we react to them can make a big difference on our well-being.

To help Filipinos protect their health, AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance providers, recently held a webinar entitled “Care for your mental health in the new normal,” featuring keynote speaker Dr. Gia Sison, a mental wellness advocate and the Philippine leader of the Live Strong Foundation.

“In the time of COVID, we feel [more] anxious, and there’s heightened emotions as we transition to the new normal. There’s also the additional threat of isolation and loneliness,” she said.

To address these concerns, the AXA webinar shared mental wellness tips for people to adapt now and in the future:

Keep a gratitude journal
Even when faced with negative situations, you should also recognize that positive things are still happening -- even during a pandemic. Be intentional in recognizing what you are thankful for and write them down in a gratitude journal.

Adopt a routine
Working from home has blurred the lines between work and rest. To avoid burnout, it is important to maintain self-control through routines and setting activities to simulate your usual schedule before COVID-19. However, routines can also become mundane, so you may integrate new activities in your schedule once in a while.

Consider mental health and media
The onslaught of negative news seen in traditional and digital media can affect people’s mental health. If you feel that your peace of mind may be affected by the news, limit your time reading or watching them. In addition, try to minimize sharing content that might be distressing to others.

Identify your coping strategies
It is vital that you reflect on what your coping strategies were before the pandemic and see if these are applicable in the current situation. Then, examine the barriers of your self-care. Also, avoid coping strategies that are negative by nature, which include drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and other practices that might hurt rather than help you.

Ground yourself
When faced with overwhelming stressors, it is important to limit the stimuli you are exposed to. This may include tuning out noise or dimming the lights. Ground yourself in the situation, especially during moments of anxiety. This can be easily done by using your five senses and identifying five things you can see, smell, and hear to help restore a sense of calm.

Practice mindfulness meditation
In situations you can no longer control, meditation can help relieve stress. Some mindfulness exercises include taking deep, slow breaths or practicing progressive muscle relaxation which entails tensing some of your muscles and slowly relaxing them afterwards. Explore these easy relaxation techniques and find what works best for you.

When it comes to self-care, there is no one-size-fits-all strategy; it is a process that might involve trial and error. To better protect your physical and mental wellbeing with a health plan that suits your needs, visit AXA Philippines’ website, https://axa.com.ph/ or talk to an agent via the landline +632 85815-292.

Sweet & Strong Red Ribbon Dads: Paul, Doug, and Drew talk about fatherhood during quarantine

Red Ribbon Cake

https://www.facebook.com/redribbonbakeshop

It doesn’t come as a surprise that many people rely on the strength of their fathers as the heads of the family.  Some fathers may be goofy, and some may be quiet, but one thing is for sure – dads have that natural ability to bring out the warmest smiles and unyielding courage in everybody within the family.

Sweet & Strong Red Ribbon Dads: Paul, Doug, and Drew talk about fatherhood during quarantine

And as we navigate through this trying time, we see our dads carrying on and exhibiting incomparable strength. While their guidance has allowed everyone to remain safe, their sweetness and lighthearted humor have kept the family hopeful and optimistic.

This situation is no different for our Red Ribbon dad ambassadors, Doug Kramer, Paul Soriano and Drew Arellano, who by their time spent indoors allowed them to cement their position as the steadfast pillars of their families, all while keeping a cheerful and cared-for household.

Doug Kramer has been spending much of his time as a parent recently, with him retiring from PBA November 2019, and his kids home-schooling for the past three years. “It’s such a pleasure being a dad to my three wonderful kids -- Kendra, Scarlett, and Gavin. Nurturing them and watching them grow leaves me with a different kind of satisfaction as their father.” Sharing how he keeps the family optimistic despite the quarantine, Doug said that he involves his kids into doing household chores. “Cheska and I take turns in doing the dishes, while the kids are taught how to do gardening and fixing their rooms. This way, they will be equipped with the right life skills so that in the future, when they are on their own, they have with them the strength to survive any challenge,” added Doug.

To Paul Soriano, instilling a positive mindset within their family makes it easier for them to triumph over any challenge. When asked what he has done to brighten up the mood at home, he shares that it is mostly his son, Seve, who brings the true spirit of joy in all of them. “Seve has been great, he has a sense of what's going on but he loves the idea that we're home with him every day. We watch films together, read books, play games, and create activities that keep us entertained,” said Paul.

Keeping the family safe has also been Drew Arellano’s top priority, most especially with a third child on the way. “My wife is pregnant, so giving utmost importance to safety and sanitation became one of my biggest responsibilities. Aside from the usual protocols, we had to explain to our young kids what was happening in a manner appropriate for their age,” shared Drew. “But now that we already got into our groove and established a routine, we realize that there are also good things coming out of this quarantine—like exercising with my wife, watching Primo swim without floaters on, watching Leon make funny facial expressions, along with other things that we would not usually see happen under normal circumstances,” he added.

As proven by Red Ribbon’s dad endorsers, fathers deserve to be honored for all the strong and sweet efforts they have done for their families even during the toughest of times. Red Ribbon makes it easier to show appreciation and give tribute to our #SweetStrongDads with delectable cakes that can make any moment, whether together or apart, sweeter and more special. LBC rolls out online remittance service, offers free transaction fee until July 5

In its effort to make sending money safer, faster, and more convenient for every Filipino, LBC Express Inc. rolls out its Instant Peso Padala (IPP) online service, the company’s latest move in bringing digital solutions closer to everyone.

As COVID-19 remains a threat, the leader in the remittance space sees the need for a service that will allow Filipinos to send money easily. “At a time when everyone’s move is limited and even sending your padala to your family members or relatives seems challenging, we recognize the need for an online remittance service that will allow you to send money without leaving your house. With just a click, you’re sure that you’re able to look after your loved ones wherever you may be,” says Mr. Oliver Valentin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Philippine Branch Operations of LBC.

LBC also announced that it is waiving the transaction fee for those using the service from June 5, 2020 to July 5, 2020.

To start sending money using IPP online, simply follow these steps:

1. Visit: https://www.lbcexpress.com/ippbanktransaction
2. Provide your details including the sender and the receiver’s name and the amount of money you’ll be sending
3. A Reference Number will be generated for you.
4. You will receive the Reference Number via email and SMS.
5. Use the Reference Number to deposit your transaction amount to any LBC express bank account.
6. Send the proof of credit by uploading your receipt to the link found in the confirmation.
7. You will receive a confirmation via SMS and email that transaction had been processed.
8. The recipient can now claim their money at any branch or partner remittance center.

LBC ensures that the process is easy enough to take away the hassle from both the sender and the receiver. To claim funds, recipients just need to go to the nearest LBC branch or partner remittance centers such as Cebuana Lhuillier, Palawan Express, and MLhuillier.

LBC has over 1,400 branches nationwide, all maintain stringent measures and protocols set by the government including social distancing and regular fumigation and sanitation. Employees are also well-equipped with safety and protection gear.

“This is just one of the several digital transformation initiatives that we are introducing at LBC as the needs of our customers evolve. We are committed to bringing the best and most meaningful solutions to LBC users as we continue to move with them, and for them, during this challenging time,” adds Mr. Valentin.

Pru Life UK launches Cha-Ching Kids at Home to promote financial literacy among Filipino families

Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home
Pru Life UK launches Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home  to promote financial literacy among Filipino families

Pru Life UK launches Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home to promote financial literacy among Filipino families

Pru Life UK has launched “Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home” online resources to help and encourage Filipino parents to teach key money management concepts to their children at home. This initiative was developed by Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential in Asia and Africa,

According to the latest financial literacy report published by The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 94 percent of students said they get information about money matters from their parents . However, parents may not know how best to teach this subject to their children.

Designed for children aged between seven and 12, the “Cha-Ching Kid$ At Home” materials guide parents on teaching key money management concepts – Earn, Save, Spend, and Donate – in an interactive and engaging way. Based on the Cha-Ching curriculum, each guide directs parents to a relevant Cha-Ching music video, key topics for discussion, and activities to help their children put learning into practice. The parent guides are downloadable for free on the Cha-Ching website and can be viewed online or printed out.

In addition to the parents’ guide, Prudence Foundation is also rolling out Cha-Ching daily challenges, which include activities or discussion pointers, posted on the website every weekday of June. Each challenge takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, aiming to encourage parents to incorporate discussions around money with their children as part of their daily life.

The guides are in English and will soon be translated into Filipino versions.

“We noticed that the global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the ways children learn and interact with their parents, and we understand the important role that parents play in promoting continued learning of their children. Through providing fun and engaging ‘Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home’ materials, Prudence Foundation aims to promote discussions around responsible money management skills among families in the region. This initiative is particularly relevant and important as many schools across the Philippines remain closed due to the pandemic,” said Prudence Foundation Executive Director Marc Fancy.

Meanwhile, the Cha-Ching website also contains a resource center where teachers can easily access the digitized version of the Cha-Ching curriculum teaching materials for self-study or review. Educators can simply log onto the Teacher section of the Cha-Ching website to download the Cha-Ching curriculum’s master list of teaching aids, session implementation video guides, music videos, and comic books on their personal electronic devices. Cha-Ching teachers can also freely equip themselves with materials of the in-class and take-home activities that they can repurpose for their students.

This initiative will help expand the reach of Cha-Ching across the Philippines and promote money-smart knowledge among students.

Cha-Ching is a financial literacy program designed for children aged seven to 12. It aims to instill the knowledge, tools and practices needed to help a child become financially responsible.

Cha-Ching is created as a series of music videos and comic books developed by Prudence Foundation in partnership with Cartoon Network, and Dr. Alice Wilder, a renowned education specialist. The program comprises a structured school curriculum incorporating activity-based learning, has been rolled out in Asia with Junior Achievement, one of the world’s largest youth-serving non-government organizations. The Cha-Ching Curriculum is currently being implemented in schools across Asia and Africa.

A heartwarming celebration for dad this Father’s Day

Solane's Fathers Day

Make dads feel loved on Father’s Day with Solane

A heartwarming celebration for dad this Father’s Day

This year’s Father’s Day may not be quite normal for all of us, especially with the ongoing pandemic. While we can’t celebrate this special occasion with a big gathering to honor and express our love for Dad, we can still make him feel loved on Father’s Day with these heartwarming ways suggested by Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider:

Prepare his favorite dishes
This special day for dads is the perfect opportunity to cook his favorite dishes. If he’s a meat lover, then you can prepare a spread of burgers, steaks and barbecue. If he is trying to be more healthy, try out some new vegan recipes. Don’t forget to complement his favorite dishes with his favorite drink!

Host a surprise virtual party with his buddies.
Because of social distancing rules, you can’t invite dad’s friends over, but you can still make it a memorable occasion by throwing him a virtual surprise party with his friends. Arrange for packs of drinks and pica-pica to be delivered to his friends’ houses and along with an invite indicating the time and log-in details for the online surprise party. Tell guests to sign in a little later than your dad for the added surprise effect. For sure, Dad will enjoy having drinks with his buddies who hasn’t seen in a while.

Grow a garden
If you’re thinking of a refreshing bonding activity with your dad, consider working on a gardening project together. The plants can add a breath of fresh air to your home during community quarantine. If you grow vegetables and fruits, you can also use them next time you cook in the kitchen together. Moreover, growing a family garden presents a great opportunity to putdown your phones and interact with each other face-to-face. That would be a very meaningful gift to give our dads this Father’s Day.

Build something together.
Does your dad enjoy building things? This Father’s Day, why not join him and suggest to make something together like a birdhouse or plant box. If the kids are too young to use the tools, bring out the paintbrushes and let them decorate the DIY projects.

Go glamping indoors.
In the house’s living room, set up a big mat with pillows, blankets, or beanie bags, where the entire family can comfortably huddle together for a night of bonding. Prepare smores, hotdogs on sticks, and other yummy snacks to lend to the camping feel, but a glamorous one, of course!
Even with everything that’s going on in the world, our dads deserve to have a fun and memorable Father’s Day celebration.
